Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us released today and it looks set to be one of the big games of the year but it has a problem right now. Several reports via NeoGAF seem to indicate that there may with a serious bug with the game’s autosave feature that could cost you a serious amount of in-game progress. At this point, the issue seems to be something inherent in the game (both physical and digital copies) and not the Day 1 patch that was released. In any case, the issue at hand is that the game’s autosave feature appears to simply stop working after a certain period of time. At that point, the game will become hung trying to autosave and attempts to manually save will then fail. When this occurs, it seems that your only viable option is to back out of the game and reload. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal except you have no idea when your last successful autosave was, so you could be launching a save file that is only a few minutes old or one that is significantly older. This entire situation is then apparently made worse by the fact that when you attempt to go back to the main menu, the game hangs again leaving you with no other option but to reboot your console.
The issue was originally reported by NeoGAF’s Dragon1893, but several other members are now corroborating the issue. Until Naughty Dog can come out with a fix, the only advice is to stop every 30 minutes or so and check the pause menu. If it says that your last autosave was a few minutes ago, you should be good, if it seems to be hanging on the words “autosaving, please wait” without changing, you might have been hit by the bug.
If you think you can remember to save yourself, autosave can be disabled when loading a game by pressing O, it should warn you that autosaving will be disabled. You press yes and the game won’t auto save anymore.
We’ve reached out to Naughty Dog for comment and we’ll keep you posted on this as it develops. In the meantime, have you been hit by the save bug during your playthrough of The Last Of Us?
Update: Naughty Dog says the problem is now resolved, all you need to do is relaunch the game if you are already playing it should be fixed. It was an issue with their servers.
The autosave issue was a problem w/ our servers. No patch needed to fix it, just re-launch the game. Thanks again :)
