Stellar Blade: Abyssal Frontier DLC Review - A Worthy Expansion

Reviews · 2026-04-23 · ZoKnowsGaming

Shift Up's first major expansion for Stellar Blade, titled Abyssal Frontier, delivers exactly what fans of the base game have been craving: more challenging combat encounters, a compelling new storyline, and a biome that feels genuinely distinct from anything in the original campaign. Set in the subterranean ruins beneath Xion, the DLC introduces roughly fifteen hours of new content including a full narrative arc, three new weapon types, and a brutal endgame dungeon that will test even veterans. At twenty-five dollars, it represents strong value for players who exhausted the base game's content months ago.

The underground setting allows the art team to flex creative muscles that the post-apocalyptic surface could not accommodate. Bioluminescent caverns give way to ancient technological ruins that hint at a civilization predating the Naytiba invasion. The visual contrast between organic cave formations and sleek metallic architecture creates striking environments that beg to be explored. Photo mode enthusiasts will find dozens of breathtaking vistas throughout the twelve new zones. The lighting engine handles the transition from pitch-dark tunnels to radiant crystal chambers with impressive technical finesse, maintaining a locked sixty frames per second on PlayStation 5.

Combat additions are the expansion's greatest strength. The three new weapon types, a whip-blade, a pair of tonfas, and a heavy lance, each offer fundamentally different playstyles that integrate smoothly with Eve's existing skill tree. The whip-blade excels at crowd control with sweeping arcs that hit multiple enemies, while the tonfas reward perfect-parry timing with devastating counter-attacks. The lance is a slower, more deliberate weapon that deals massive stagger damage to the new boss enemies. Each weapon has its own upgrade path and unique Beta Skills, adding substantial depth to an already robust combat system.

The Abyssal Frontier's story explores the origins of the Naytiba through environmental storytelling and a handful of well-acted cutscenes. Without spoiling specifics, the revelations here reframe several key moments from the base game in surprising ways. The final boss encounter is a multi-phase spectacle that ranks among the best action game bosses in recent memory. A few pacing issues in the middle chapters and some recycled enemy types from the base game prevent this expansion from achieving perfection. Nevertheless, Abyssal Frontier earns a solid 8.5 out of 10 and firmly establishes Stellar Blade as a franchise with long-term potential.
