If you still play the award-winning online war game that is ArmA II, then you might have heard of ground breaking zombie mod “Dayz”. If you haven’t heard of this gaming gem, you will be kicking yourself for showing up at the party late. Dayz is an ArmA II zombie survival mod that has become insanely popular, mixing basic survival instincts within a zombie apocalypse, what more do you want. The formula is enough to garner over 900,000 unique Dayz users according to the Dayz website, with 500,000 new users since last month, so yeah not too shabby for a mod.
The recent spike in user sign-ups probably spawned from the recent Steam summer sale which saw ArmA II: Combined Operations included among many other titles. With many people buying the game for the Dayz mod, the game sprinted to the top of the Steam sales chart, beating Orcs Must Die 2 to the top spot. Taking all this into account, it wont be long until the zombie survival hits over 1,000,000 unique users and hopefully a console version in the future (fingers crossed).
In a recent interview with VG247, creator Dean Hall talked about cashing in on the game’s hype and creating a standalone title, taking a similar road to heavyweight ‘Minecraft’, “I want to see it become a standalone game, following the Minecraft model of a low price point, but that will only work if we say that everyone is going to pay,” Hall said. “In order for people to not feel ripped off we need to have a load of new content; so, things like base-building, tidying and cleaning up animations and add ragdoll physics as the like.”
Hall hopes for a standalone release this year if a publishing agreement with Bohemia Interactive can be made soon, so stay tuned for any info on that. If you have Arma II and not experienced Dayz yet, I highly recommend you do so, but be careful as it’s a ruthless game and not for anyone looking for an easy affair.
