As far as rumors go, reports about next-gen consoles usually pick up a good bit of traction. With rumors flying left, right and center about release dates and names, it’s hard to find truth in anything that gets picked up by the media. Well Microsoft have gone and set the rumor mill ablaze again, with the company registering a handful of domains recently, with one titled “Xbox 8”, causing many to believe it will be the name of the next Xbox console.
Website Fusible previously reported on Microsoft winning two domain disputes they filed to the National Arbitration Forum in May, giving them complete control of various Xbox domains. The full list of Xbox Domains are:
What makes the Xbox 8 domain stand out from the usual console names that hit the web is that the name fits. Especially when you think how Microsoft has already announced Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, with both launching at the end of the year. This could just mean a stronger partnership between Xbox and Windows 8, or the safe bet, with Microsoft snatching those domains to protect its intellectual property. With most of the domains covering different types of hardware, maybe Microsoft is looking to connect everything and have a new Xbox console as the centerpiece.
Many speculate the eight in Xbox 8 is an infinity symbol, with names like Xbox Infinity and Xbox Infinite being brought up. As usual we take this with a pinch of salt – no need to get excited about something that can be squashed in minutes, right?
