I thought my wish had come true and that there wasn’t going to be some lame, hastily thrown together video game tie-in to Marvel’s “The Avengers”, though if recent info proves to be true then my worst nightmare is coming true. Marvel has recently registered the domain www.avengersbattleforearth.com which most people assume points to a game called “Avengers: Battle for Earth”. The domain was registered by Marvel we would assume for brand protection but here’s where it gets interesting. The domain is currently parked on none other than Ubisoft’s servers.
Initial thoughts were that it was a possible Facebook game but a recent comment by TQ Jefferson, vice president of games production for Marvel would seem to lend some validity to other thoughts that Avengers: Battle For Earth is a console game.
We launched Marvel: Avengers Alliance on Facebook; which is just the tip of the iceberg. This is the first in a much larger effort to support the Avengers franchise across not just one but multiple video game touch points. The Avengers are bigger than just one game, and we’re planning to allow consumers to enjoy The Avengers regardless of their preference in gameplay style or platform. Look for more announcements in the weeks to come.
Not to mention the fact that THQ was already working on an Avengers game before they closed the studio that was working on it, THQ Studio Australia. If they do have a game in the works, they have done a great job keeping it a secret which is hard to do in this day and age. What I want to know is whether I’m the only one that really hopes they aren’t doing a video game tie-in to this movie? I saw “The Avengers” yesterday and it was excellent and I really hope they don’t cheapen it by doing some cheap video game to make a quick few bucks.
