Can Apple Afford Not To Release The iPhone 5 This Summer?

This is a question that we have been kicking around for a while now and can’t seem to come to any kind of consensus, so we will take it to your our readers. There is no denying that Apple is the current king of the technology castle and can pretty much get away with anything it wants. Apple delivers their products how they deliver them, don’t succumb to pricing pressure, and still make oodles and oodles of money. The reason that they can do this is because they make innovative products that are simple and easy to use. It seems that no matter what Apple puts out, the masses will flock to it. If Apple tells us that it is essential to our daily lives, then durn it must be. It seems that Apple isn’t bound by the normal logic that all other companies are bound by. But depending on what they do with the iPhone 5 launch, we might just find out.

If Apple stays on schedule and sticks to the script, then we should see the iPhone 5 sometime this summer. However, rumors are starting to grow that Apple may not release a new iPhone this summer or even this year. There are multiple rumors as to why this might happen including delays related to the earthquake in Japan, the very recent introduction of the iPhone 4 to Verizon Wireless, and even some issues related to getting the new retina display just right. All the rumors have a bit of validity, but it’s hard to know for sure. The Verizon iPhone 4 in particular is one that has merit because folks with a Verizon iPhone 4 have only had the phone for about two months. If Apple announces a new iPhone not even 6 months after that, people are going to be pissed and rightfully so. The argument that Apple could release the iPhone 5 on AT&T first and then release it on Verizon later just isn’t going to happen, no way after waiting all these years to get the iPhone will Verizon accept being second fiddle.

Our question to all you fine folk is this, can Apple afford to not release the iPhone 5 on schedule this year? If they released it this year, but later in the year would that affect your thoughts about purchasing it? It seems like Android phones are falling from the sky like raindrops and it seems with every new release, the gap in both capability and usability is shrinking. What do you think?
