With today’s announcement that Duke Nukem will finally make his way to next gen consoles after a decade long saga should be great news for gamers, but alas there is one problem. Duke is a throwback to a different time and that’s not a bad thing at all. The major problem that Gearbox and 2K have on their hands now is that it will be almost impossible for this game to live up to expectations.
Duke Nukem is one of the original video game bad boys, way before we ever heard about guys named Nathan Drake, Sam Fisher, Master Chief or Kratos. Duke is brash, cocky, and prefers to shoot first and ask questions later. Duke is all the things that us gamers want him to be, he kicks ass and takes names. I have no doubt that Gearbox will deliver a hell of a game when Duke Nukem Forever finally drops, however, with this much hype and expectation its almost a given that folks will find a way to say it could have been better and that is a real shame.
The story of this game finally getting released is kind of like its lead character, it persevered through amazing odds. This game has suffered bankruptcy by the company developing it, lawsuits, and I am sure plenty of stuff that we don’t even know about. When this game finally does get released, whether its good or bad, we should celebrate the fact that it finally got released at all, that a few people thought that it could be great and fought to see it come to fruition. As game’s journalist, our job is to tell you the truth about games and hopefully help you save your hard earned money on games that suck but with this game a lot of folks are going to have a lot of baggage and I just hope that it doesn’t cloud their judgment.
But that’s just me, tell us what you think, is there anyway that Duke Nukem Forever can actually live up to the inevitable hype?
