I am not a huge strategy fan, but when I heard a Civilization title was coming to consoles I had to try it and I loved it. There is something about taking over a civilization and then inflicting my will on several others until they all crumble under the might of my armies that is just addictive. As always, one of the strengths of turn based strategy games is the replay value, every game is different and there is something to be said about truly matching wits with the computer A.I. and coming out on top. Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution wasn’t as deep as some of its PC counterparts but for console gamers I thought it delivered a solid experience and more importantly one that I wanted more of but alas its been two years and we haven’t heard anything about another console Civilization in the works and that saddens me.
According to VGchartz, as of today Civilization Revolution has only sold a little under 1.5 million copies, which by most standards isn’t outstanding but for an introductory title to console gamers I don’t think it was bad at all, in fact it was rather solid. It proved that they could do it and it created a lot of fans, me included. Not to mention that on Metacritic its still rated an 85 for the PS3 version. To put this in context, The original Army Of Two almost a million copies more but was rated almost 10 points lower on Metacritic but they still got a sequel. And we all know how that sequel did don’t we. By all accounts, Civilization Revolution was critically acclaimed across the gaming industry and all we hear is crickets concerning when and if another console installment will ever see the light of day on this generation of consoles. So what does it all mean?
I don’t really know except one of the things I use to determine if a game should have a follow up is staying power and Civilization Revolution has that. I have been through games that I would rate much better than Civilization Revolution overall, but of all of them the only one I STILL own is Civilization and that says something. Not only that, when I turn on my PlayStation I still see my friends on PSN playing it too. With all the games that have come between, its crazy that folks would still be playing a title that’s two years old already but they do. Sid Meier is the king of turn based strategy and I think that two years is way to long for him to be out of the console business. But hey I could be alone in this you tell me, does 2K need to get another Civilization title for consoles in the pipleine ASAP or am I in the minority?
