Playing Call Of Duty On Your PS3 Could Be Dangerous

So about six months ago we did an article called “Is Call Of Duty Causing Disc Read Error On The PS3” (read the comments you will see this does happen). Please read that article first so you will have a frame of reference for what I am about to say. The reason I wrote the original article is because it happened to me, I was playing Call Of Duty: World At War when all of the sudden my PS3 freaked out and froze. I had to do a hard restart and when it came back the game disc didn’t appear, I knew it was in there but it didn’t get recognized by the PS3. I tried everything to make it work as I talked about in the other article but nothing worked. While searching for fixes on the net, I came across what I thought was starting to look like a very disturbing trend. And that my friends is what brings us here.

zkgcodwawcover

Apparently Treyarch’s COD isn’t so good for your PS3.

So even though that original article was six months old we were still getting comments on it, people from all over the place saying that Call Of Duty, particularly “World At War” was giving them the same error. I had been thinking about doing an update on this and had inquired to both Infinity Ward and Treyarch for comment but at the time this article was written had not received a response. That was just preliminary though and I still wasn’t sure I was going to write it and then something strange happened. Through the course of working out an issue I was having I came in contact with someone that was intimately familiar with the issue, a former employee of Infinity Ward. They signed NDA’s and what not so I can not reveal their name. I had no idea that our conversation would lead where it did, but this is my recount of it.

I mentioned that I needed to review a game and that I should have had it done already and they inquired as to what I did. I told them that I ran my own site and gave them the url. They checked it out and said they liked it. One way or the other after they mentioned they used to work at Infinity Ward, I mentioned the disc read thing to them and they weren’t surprised at all, in fact they already knew about it. I suggested that since Infinity Ward and Treyarch use the same base code that the issue must be inherent to the all COD titles but I was told that this is not the case. Our major concern was that if that was true then this issue could affect the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 and we wanted to make sure that is not the case because from what we have seen it looks like GOTY material. They said that the issue was in fact specific to Treyarch’s version and that it had to do with how the code was compiled and executed. They said that the way that Treyarch’s code is executed and organized causes the disc to spin too fast in the PS3 thus blowing the Blu Ray lens and that is what causes all those disc read errors. According to the source Treyarch knows about this, though we can’t confirm that allegation. They said that the Infinity Ward code is done properly and thus doesn’t suffer from this issue, which I am pretty much inclined to believe since when we searched the net we found a few instances where people mentioned this happening with COD4, but the overwhelming majority of cases we came across were focused on World at War which is made by Treyarch (So we aren’t saying that this doesn’t happen with COD4 or Infinity Ward COD’s as well but nowhere near on the same scale or frequency according to the information we have gathered). So I asked them straight out, “are you saying that Call of Duty is causing disc read errors in the PS3?” and they said “Treyarch’s Call Of Duty, Yes”. At the sound of that revelation I have to admit I felt a little vindication because when I wrote the original article so many said we made it up, that it doesn’t happen so it was nice to know that our assumptions were true.

zkgiwtrey

This seems to be yet another strike against Treyarch.

Now did we question their motivation being that they were a “former” employee of Infinity Ward and they might be trying to skew views about stuff yes, but after talking with them it was apparent that they were still very fond of Infinity Ward and that there didn’t seem to be any malice behind the insight they were providing, they seemed to be motivated to set the record straight. We talked about several other things that we may or may not write about in future articles, but there is one piece of unannounced info that was given to us that if proven to be true will validate their whole story.

They asked us if we had ever heard of the TV series, Firefly, a short run Fox series (only 14 episodes) that was set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. The show explored the lives of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war who now make a living on the outskirts of the society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. They said that we should be on the lookout because we would be hearing about a title from Infinity Ward very soon that is loosely based around the same premise as the show. If that proves to be true then by reading this article you just got a twofor, you found out the truth about the disc read error on the PS3 and about a new IP from Infinity Ward.

If further evidence is discovered that substantiates what you have just read in this article, I don’t know what it could mean legally for Treyarch. What are the ramifications if they knew their code could potentially cause this issue and didn’t disclose it or try and correct it?  It may also be a bit of a boom for Sony, who could separate itself from the problem of the Blu-Ray lens failures to a degree. However, it still would be in Sony’s best interest to try and make it so that this can not happen, either by changing how the game interacts with the system or by tightening the quality control on developers. In any case a customer shouldn’t have to worry about what games they put in the system as long as its an approved disc. To be even more clear, Sony should have some kind of fail safe in place that monitors the disc speed (We would think that this could be done with an update) and if it breaks a predetermined threshold then it should automatically stop the disc and power down the PS3, the PS3 is an expensive piece of hardware that needs to be protected, not to mention it would go a long way in decreasing the overall number of PS3′s that fail thus increasing the reliability of their product. The bottom line is that a piece of software shouldn’t be able to break a piece of hardware this easily. Right now we aren’t sure why some PS3′s are affected and some are not, my first one had the issue but my second one didn’t, though I did play it a lot less after that.

Don’t forget to check out more of our great content on the homepage.

In the other article some people mentioned the possibility of a class action lawsuit and while before I thought that might be harder to achieve, now it might be easier than I thought. Sony would be good to replace free of charge the PS3 of anyone who has had this issue because if a game is causing a hardware failure that is absolutely NOT the fault of the consumer. The only problem there is how do you prove that the person actually had the issue, especially if it was someone like me who just went out and bought another console. As far as the cost goes, Sony shouldn’t care because the bill should be footed by Treyarch’s parent company Activision-Blizzard. Activision’s head guy blasted Sony for not lowering its price on the PS3 and having a console that was difficult and expensive to develop for and pondered not supporting the PS3 in the future, if Sony can substantiate this issue I would say that puts the leverage right back on Sony’s side in that ongoing battle.

The bottom line is what are these two huge companies going to do to make this right with the consumers that have been affected by this and we don’t think that doing nothing is an option. But that’s what we think, we want to know what you think?

I was actually playing COD W@W when I came across the title…I immediately quit the game hahaha

But I actually got the YLOD (yellow light of death from playing COD4)….My PS3 would play every other game BUT COD4…It would reset 10 seconds into the game

    2. LukaX23 says:

Although I have never gotten a disc read error in either COD4 or WAW, I have noticed that WAW runs noticeably worse than the original COD4 did on my PS3. The frame rate is constantly up and down, the online games stutter, etc. I’ve never had ANY of these problems in COD4.

Ohh my god, this articles is nothing, no proof, based on some peoples you met somewhere that you don’t remember their names. This is great (profanity removed)!!! Keep up the good job. This could also be coincidence or maybe E.T did this, you would believe it too!!

      • @Iso,

We would ask you to watch your language as we have young kids who read this site. It is also obvious that you did not read the prior article or comments associated because if you did then you might have a different opinion. Have a look at those and then let us know what you think. Thank you.

    4. Shattered says:

This did not happen to me on World at War. However I did get the ever so annoying disc read error from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I was just playing online, waiting for Pipeline to load up and all of a sudden the game seemed to freeze, so I hard restarted my PS3 and bang, disc read error and I was (profanity removed). So I ended up giving MTC (I live in Canada) $100 so I can get a new blu-ray drive put in to replace my now fried drive.

Ever since that happened it’s been fine. Although I haven’t been able to play it for 4 months and I hope it still works when I am able to turn it on in either a few days or in September, maybe even later than that.

Moderated by ZKG, please refrain from using expletives in your comments. Thank you.

      • Don’t know if you read the original article but your story seems like what happened to me except I was playing COD5, but the same exact scenario was playing online and then poof.

    5. Kevin says:

I play Call of Duty: World at War all the time since I got it in November. I had recently had freezing problems when someone leaves a party (though it is a “Once in a Blue Moon” thing). My PlayStation 3 got the YLOD when I played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare after several months of playing it. I still blame IW for it.

      • That interesting Kevin. As you read in the article we assume that this happens on Infinity Ward’s as well just not as often. We are still trying to determine why it happens to some PS3′s and not others. Perphaps there is some set of events or key strokes that causes this to happen but either way it shouldn’t happen.

    6. gR1m_r3aPr says:

well i have both cod4 and waw and listen to this…
-playing cod4: i go to multiplayer hit the button and it holds me up waiting to download the settings and doesn’t show my level for a lond time. i get signed out of psn and i have to try multiple times to dwnld the game settings until it finally does…not as bad as this one tho
-playing waw: i get to the start button menu and it logs me out of psn. i goto multiplayer and hit the button it makes the menu click sound multiple times then i get signed out again. it takes me almost 15 to 20 minutes to get signed in and dwnld the game settings on this one…but wait heres more
-my friends ps3 who lives right across the street from me. he turns on his ps3 with either cod4 or waw in the ps3 and it wont let him sign in at all. When he takes the disc out he can sign in and play any other game just fine, but when the disc is in, without even playing it, it wont let him sign in to psn.
-i used to think it was comcast blocking some of the internet bandwith but now i know its just CALL OF DUTY games that do this.

    7. Momex says:

The disc read error happened to me while playing a COD5 match online early Feb 09. I ended up having to send my system in for repair at my expense sense the system was out of warranty. This article pretty much explains it all. Go figure.

    8. SoulKeeper26 says:

Call of Duty is cool but it got kind of old and Activision is getting on my nerves trying to threat sony for their price like what does it matter to them they just shouldnt buy a ps3 for themselves.

    9. cell989 says:

well i Played the crap out of COD4 reached prestige 10 and all, and I never had a problem. Now COD5, well I never bought it, so I cant comment on that. Im just hoping MW2 doesnt come with this burden.

      • @cell989,

Nice to see you back. That is why we are trying to brings this to IW’s attention, so that if it is they can correct it and when MW2 comes out there won’t even be one case of this.

    10. terrking24 says:

Last January i was playing COD5, it froze on me a couple of times and around the 5th time i tried it i got ylod

    11. Didjamama says:

My ps3 was locking up watching BD movies and would do the whole thing where it acts like there is no disc in the console. It happened twice with two different movies (Tropical Thunder and Dark Knight) but only happened with movies…well I rented W@W and was playing in and since it was just a few days after the movies I assumed my ps3 crapped on me I have been playing my 360 ever since and paying for live. This blows my mind that it could have just been an isolated incident I’m going to go get killzone now and see if it works. You know what happens when you ass-u-me.

    12. Will says:

lol im really scared that my PS3 is going to like break or something because i had it for over a year and a half without a single problem. So now I’m worried if it will like blow out cuz i sometimes just leave it on for no reason or leave it on throughout the night. One time I just left it on for like 20 hours straight because i forgot to shut it off. It starts to get reallllllly hot when you leave it on. I heard like the parts start to shift because of the heat and shit. Since my 1 year warranty is over I think im gonna pay 150$ if it breaks. I’ve been playing cod4 since 2 novembers ago and my ps3 got no problem with it.

    13. Iso says:

Moderate as you wish, this article is nothing but non-sense.

      • @iso,

We did not alter your comment besides removing the expletive because we don’t condone that language. You are more than welcome to give your opinion, all we ask is that you not use foul language. Even though we don’t agree, at ZKG we respect your right to see it that way.

    14. Mike says:

COD4 killed my launch ps3′s blu-ray drive, sony sent me a replacement with 4 months warrenty and i then took out sony playstation cover. good thing i did because afew weeks after i did cod4 killed that 1. I got W@W but stilled prefered modern so got rid of it afew weeks, glad i did because i may hav gone through more ps3′s then i already have.

    15. CookieKrisp says:

This is such a BS story.
There is no possible way that Treyarch or ANY dev. could make the hardware spin faster than it’s top speed. If the DVD can’t handle spinning at it’s top speed for an hour or two, than the hardware sucks and you should be complaining to Sony.

Also, consider this possibility: if the only game you are playing , for the most part, is W@W….then what disk do you think is gonna be in the drive when it fails? I think you guys are just getting hit with crappy hardware. There is just no possible way that any software can change or modify the top speed of the DVD player. The only explanation is that maybe WaW causes the disk to spin up/down more often by streaming data from the DVD , and that is causing more wear and tear on the hardware , and thus Treyarch and WaW is the scapegoat…just like always.

    16. Mark says:

COD4 killed my 1st PS3, WAW hasn’t given me any problems.

    17. GameGodDude says:

I have never played COD W@W with my PS3 and it stilled burned out the BD drive. I always play Rock Band 2 and a crap load of other games, however, It just happens that my PS3 burned out while I was playing Rock Band 2 the other day. I am a few days away from my 1 year warranty so Sony is repairing the system for me.

I also had an original 60G launch system that burned out for no reason when I used to play Rock Band 1 a lot. I think the drives are just still new technology and are burning out. I have noticed one common thing though, Both my 60G and my 80G MGS systems are both backward compatible and have burned out. My 40G is about a year old and has been okay so far. Not sure if maybe the BC might have something to do with the problem or not. Maybe the drives in those systems are different somehow and burn out easier.

      • @GameGodDude,

That’s an interesting thought. The thing that we want to make sure that we are clear about is that we aren’t saying that this does not happen with other titles we are simply saying is that based on the information that we have we are very sure that COD:WAW is one of them.

    18. DUmbDumbs says:

I’ve gone through 2 xbox 360′s and 1 ps3…I will never blame a game for a console death. This is crap

      • We have said it before and we will say it again, if you have read all the other articles, all the other comments then you might feel differently. Read the comment about the guys nephew who had a PS3 that got this error twice and what he said about how do you tell a 12 year old its not his fault, that comment still sticks out in my mind. We respect your opinion though.

    19. Todd says:

Oh god, you are an idiot. People really need to stop passing off certain games are the reason for a console to die. If you think a certain game killed your console then you sir are an idiot. Correlation does not imply causation. Just because WaW was in your PS3 when it died, or any other game for that matter, it doesn’t mean that game killed your console. Everytime a big release comes out that people play a lot for an extended period of time you always hear about that game killing consoles.

      • @Todd,

You don’t agree with us but just because you don’t agree with us doesn’t mean you need to resort to name calling. If you have read the other articles we have written about this topic in the past and more importantly the comments you would know that this HAS happened to a lot of people and just because it doesn’t happen to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. It is very closed minded to be that way and berate others simply because they have had different experiences than you. The thing that you would also know is that differently from other people who have posted, we play just about everything that comes out and never had a problem, so when something like this does happen it has to make us wonder. On a regular basis we play games for extended amounts of time btw 8-10 hours and never had a problem until that game. From reading your entire comment it seems that you are very intelligent and we are sure that you can get your point across without calling people idiots. Glad to have your comment though. :)

    20. Derek says:

Please read this if your ps3 will not read discs, for I have found a makeshift solution to this problem. I have played a lot of games on my original 60g ps3 (including cod4 and codwaw). Several months ago, my system froze and I had to reboot something 3 times before I could get back into the xmb.

Since then, none of my games have shown up in the menu, even if I take them out and reinsert, or restart. My system is out of warranty and Sony quotes me at $150 to fix.

HOWEVER, I found that if you have the disc in, then load a demo game, then press the ps button so the xmb pops up, the game WILL now show up. Simply click on the game. It will then prompt you to accept leaving your current demo to load the game. Click yes and now you can play. I have been doing this for months now……..and yes it is a pain, but it works until I can figure out how to deal with the situation (because I sure as hell don’t have $150 to send it in!)

Let me know if you find this useful.

While you may have had good intentions in writing this article, you are sadly misinformed.
An optical drive, such as Blu-ray, DVD etc cannot be broken because someone wrote bad code in their program. These devices have hardware controllers attached to them that interact between the CPU and Optical Device. The program can tell the CPU whatever it wants, and the CPU can tell the Controller whatever the Program tells it do to. The Controller has a set number of instructions and if the CPU tells it to do something it can’t, the Controller won’t do it. It can not allow the Device it is controlling to operate outside of it’s physical limits.
There are a number of ways a controller will interpret impossible commands. One is, the Controller will tell the CPU that it’s overflow is full and it cannot accept more instructions. When the Controller can accept more information the instructions from the CPU will resume.

Another is, the Controller will stop all instructions and tell the CPU it made a mistake.

There is no option in any hardware controller to:
override the device’s physical limitations until it breaks.

You can’t run so fast you’re legs will fall off and neither can your Blu-ray drive.

hey guys. i certainly heard a rumor regarding ps3′s failing blue ray lens, i just don’t really get why coz given the fact that the ps3 isnt modable yet. Im from the philippines. I had a friend working as a technician in a game shop and i asked him about how was the ps3 sales doin despite the fact that 360 are selling like pancakes here coz it is modable and affordable. He told me the sales were not good since the xbox 360 came back to life with a price cut and with the reliable vesion (jasper). I asked him so how was the 360 doin? are there plenty of repairs yet? (” coz i bought 2 years ago from them and it broke”) he told me that so far there are some especially the old ones but they haven’t encountered any jasper poblems like error or 3rrld. I asked him if there are any ps3 problems, and he told me plenty, i asked him are “SURE?” then he said Yes, even He wasnt expecting also coz mostly 90% of ps3 users here in the Philippines cannot over use their ps3′s given the fact that you cant buy pirated disk from it unlike the xbox 360 which would only cost around 3-4 dollars ( 180 pesos)in each title.

I asked him whats the problem, he said its the lens failing and getting burned, although he never said anything that playing WAW does toast the lens. according to him since January until now he does managed to repair around 50+ ps3′s and replaced their lens with a internal blue ray drive which is very expensive. given the demographics here people who owns a ps3, that is already a big number of failures. Don’t tell me because ps3 stocks here are asian versions that why it has bad qualities…..

Well i dont really had enough evidence to support my accusations that ps3′s had bad hardware’s now but the info was from a technician on a popular console shop which is my friend. you will be the judge….

damnnnnnnnnnnnn! why do consoles these days broke so easily, i guess i just stick to my old xbox modded with a 500 gb HDD and my low spec gaming PC. ^_^

Expletives removed? Someone’s been paying too much to the “Word of the Day” toilet paper.

Sure it means an interjectory word or expression that is normally profane, vulgar, or obscene, however not always. But in a linguistic / syntax approach, you’re usage of the word is wrong; i.e. [A word or other grammatical element that has no meaning but is needed to fill a syntactic position, such as the words "it" and "there" in the sentences: "It's raining" and "There are many books on the table."]

In addition, it’s probably best to stick with things that people are familiar with, i.e. “vulgarity removed” / “edited by author” / “@#%&.”

Why? Because your readers may get to learn a new word, but not the correct usage.

      • @LinguisticsNaxi,

When looking at it, you do have a point to a degree as you said can mean profane or vulgar but not always. We always listen to what our readers have to say and thus we have replaced “expletive” with “profanity” which should be more clear. Thanks for the comment.

    26. PC says:

      @Mark
Whilst I find it doubtful that the software could cause the disk to spin too fast, it is not impossible that it could cause the disk to malfunction. Requesting that the hardware perform any operation too frequent will produce wear. A perfect example of this is the original laser disk arcade games Dragons Lair and Space Ace. They required the laser disk to constantly seek back and forth to the different scenes causing extreme wear and most broke within a year or two. They were not designed for the constant seeking. It is quite possible the same scenario could be occurring here.
I’m sure your post was with good intention and did not mean to be condescending to the author. However, I would expect a higher accolade than a diploma before suggesting proof reading.

I just received a new PS3 back from Sony after spending $150 to get it fixed after the disk drive stopped working …while I was playing CoD5. This is real, and it is bull**** that I should have to pay that much money out of my own pocket for Tetryarch’s mistake.

      @PC
I’m sorry if you find my 3 year Technologists Diploma not enough to give an opinion. I’ve contemplated doing the last year and half to get my full BASc but there hasn’t been a reason to.
But in regards to the rest of your comment, you cannot compare 25+ year old proven unreliable hardware and technology to what we have now (the Dragon’s Lair thing). Back then, in a lot of cases, hardware controlling was guesswork and trial and error.
Optical Drives have come a long way since Laserdiscs, and comparing how they used to work (and broke), to how they work now is a little silly.

    32. Brendan says:

Just when I was looking for a reason to turn my Ps3 on again……….

      • @Brendan,

I don’t think this is a reason not to turn on your PS3, we think the PS3 is the best console around and thats why we cover it. It has its issues just as any other console or piece of hardware does, but we do think that the pro’s outweigh the cons.

    33. PC says:

      @Mark
Apology accepted :) . I never said that you weren’t informed to give an opinion but offering proof reading so that all future articles are factually correct is taking it a bit far. If it’s only an extra year and a half to get a full BASc, why wouldn’t you? In an economy where jobs are scarce I would have thought get the degree, imho.
Do I think the Dragons Lair example was a little silly? :) No. The point is that it is quite possible for software to break hardware through unnecessary/unexpected wear. All devices will eventually break through wear, bad software can simply accelerate this.

    34. Mark says:

@PC I have a good job (been at the same one now since I graduated 4 years ago), and I have one guaranteed for a long time. If I ever lose it, I will go back and finish the BASc, but at this point it’s just a piece of paper for me.

The reason I offered to proof-read technical articles is because that’s already part of my job description and I like to do it and I thought helping out a site in my free time would be fun.

Nowadays, it’s much harder to break hardware via software than it used to be and only (99.9%) in cases of where the Drivers or firmware is written incorrectly/poorly.

Laserdisc players paved the way for optic-drives, but reliability was one thing they improved upon. Laserdisc players were not built to last, regardless. And the Dragon’s Lair “failure” was more correlation than causation. Dragon’s Lair was hugely popular and thus it broke it more often than other titles. For reference, Space Ace “caused” about the same amount of failures. In short laserdiscs were not meant for the arcade, and were abandoned fairly fast because of their huge unreliability.

hell sony has done a verry good job screwing up PS3s with there firmware updates.
theres thousands of ps3s that were bricked with the 2.6 update and a few after that.

Guys, this is total BS. The reason this rumor was started was because of the massive numbers of people playing W@W. There are a lot of W@W players having this error simply because there are a lot of W@W players. Period. I can’t believe people propagate such ridiculousness.

i have had my ps3 for less than a year, i play COD world at war 95% of its total usage! the system started by, not identifying when a disk was inserted, and i restarted, it worked once more, then the same thing again. i tried a blue- ray after my other games, no luck, then a dvd, and or cd still nothing! now its useless, any one find out how to get this covered????, i do not want to put 150$ in repairs ( thats what sony asks for) for repairs, for a $500 system that lasts less than a year!

I understand your pain on this one. What happened to you is essentially what happened to me and thats why I wrote that article, though at first a dvd worked for me then the next day it died. At this point what you do it all depends on if you are in your warranty period but since you referenced Sony's repair cost I would assume you are out of warranty. At this point you can either send it back to Sony to fix, do what I did and take it to Gamestop and trade it for cash value, they will give you a $150 credit for it even if its broken, well at least they used to but they may have changed it since the price of the PS3 has dropped. But whatever they give you then you would only need the difference to get a new PS3 and at $299 that might not be a bad idea. Otherwise, there aren't a lot of options but I agree with you I didn't want a refurbished system because well its an expensive piece of hardware and they hardly ever send you yours back. I will tell you this though the PS3 failure rate is roughly half of the Xbox 360, maybe even a little less, unfortunately this gen it seems to be happening a lot more than last time around. I feel your pain though Josh, if I bought a new one like a PS3 Slim, I might get it from someplace and actually pay for the durn three year warranty from them.

What do you say to a user like me? I'm a 36 yr old dad-to-be that bought the PS3 because it was rated as an affordable and quality Blu-Ray player. In the eight months I had it, I watched about 10 movies on it, no games. My wife finds COD4 at the library and said I should try the game side of the machine. Why not, right? I use the game for three hours, and then turn off the machine at the end of my playing. the next day I decide to watch a movie, and no media will now load. What am I to assume? That my barely used hardware suddenly failed? Why would it fail? What changed? The first game I ever use in the system is COD4, and the next day I have an expensive 80 GB media server and that's it.

My two cents is that correlation is not causation, but if it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck….well, you get the point. Either way, somewhere between Sony and the software developer, problems like this need to be addressed.
