Only hours after announcing that a new update would be coming, the update is available for download. I just downloaded it a few minutes ago and it is installing now. We think that the surprise that was included that PS3 owners had been asking for is new avatars. There is also some reports of cross-game invites now working but ZKG has yet to confirm that. More details to come.
Just a quick shot so that everyone knows this is for real.
Update: More than a day after the update become available in some places, Sony has finally decided to tell us what’s in it. You can read the whole list below but probably the biggest thing is that you can now do in-game chat. The other biggie is that you can now back up content you have downloaded from the video store which folks have been asking for because if your system crashed Sony would NOT let you download that content again without paying for it if you didn’t deactivate your old PS3 from video but that’s another story read that here. Everything else is pretty much cosmetic.
The PLAYSTATION®3 system software version 2.80 (with 2.76 and 2.70) update includes the following:
You can now do text chat with people on your Friends list. You can also participate in text chat during gameplay.
Other new or revised features in version 2.80 (with 2.76 and 2.70):
[Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as an option under [Music Settings].
You can now selectively back up content (file type MNV) that was downloaded from the Video Store of PlayStation®Store and you can restore files that you selectively backed up to the same PS3™ system. You can use this feature to back up both SD (standard definition) and HD (high definition) resolution content.
New for 2.80: The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION®3 format software has been improved.
New for 2.76: The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION®3 format software has been improved.
You can now easily search the Internet for information about your PLAYSTATION®3 format software, as well as for games you purchased from PlayStation®Store. Select the icon for the game, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title.
You can now copy and paste text from a Web page viewed in the Internet browser.
[Copy Address of This Page] and [Copy Address of This Link] have been added as options under [File] in the browse mode menu of the Internet browser.
[Browser Security] has been added as an option to the browse mode menu of the Internet browser. The websites for the Web filtering services that used to be listed under [Bookmarks] have been moved under this new option.
The order in which Friends are listed in the Friends list has been changed. You can now sort by name (alphabetical order) and by status, listing both online and offline Friends by the last time online. When you have pending requests to add Users as Friends, the icons for these Users are now displayed at the top of the Friends list.
The maximum size for files that can be attached to messages has been increased to 3 MB.
