PS3 Won’t Read Game Disc Error..Phantom Fluke or Solid Fact?

PS3 Won’t Read Game Disc Error..Phantom Fluke or Solid Fact?

This is one that I had heard about and read articles about but wasn’t sure what to make of. Then the other night I was playing Call of Duty: World at War and kicking major butt I might add and after the game ended, it usually goes to the load screen before loading out to launch another game but it didn’t do it this time. This time it kind of just stayed on the black screen with the COD logo at the bottom that said loading. It had taken a little longer than normal before so I waited a few minutes and still nothing. I pressed the PS button to see if my XMB was still alive and it was, so I chose quit game thinking I could quit out and come back in. The only problem was that it didn’t quickly close out like I had expected and then I got the yellow light flash and the error beep, no biggie that has happened a few times when I forced out of a game when it had froze. So finally, it comes back to the home screen and I go to launch COD and its not their. I eject the disc, look for it again no dice. I cut it completely off and remove the power cord and turn it back on and still no dice, it was accepting the disc, just not reading it.

Now had this been the old days when I was a bit younger I would be freaking at this point, but instead I calmly went to the internet to see if I could find an answer. I searched and searched and it began to look dire as most of the post and topics said that it was a failure of the blu ray lens and that folks were sending it back to Sony. I was hoping that this wasn’t the case, but it wasn’t looking good. There apparently have been issues like this before with PS3′s of all ages, from ones that people have had for over a year to ones they have had for a few months. There doesn’t seem to be a particular glut in any one model, though I did see a few more referencing the 60GB model (which is what I own).

Has this happened to you?

So I started to freak out a little, I mean up till this point I had really had no problems with my PS3 and have had it for what just became a year. I kept reading and I came across a thread and at the bottom was an interesting fix and explanation, well not the most interesting that was the one about mustard in the USB ports but I digress. The post recommended putting in a regular movie DVD in order for it to load the compound elements or whatever those are back and then try it. I put the DVD in and still no dice. I cut it off and then back on and wouldn’t you know it, it recognized the DVD. So I popped it out and popped COD back in and it worked, so I have to give that guy thanks though I don’t remember the thread.

Check out my follow up this article “Is Call of Duty Causing Disc Read Errors in PS3′s here

I don’t know if this was just a minor glitch or an example of what may be a bigger problem, but the one thing I do know is that it does happen. It happens to people who don’t do anything out of the ordinary and take good care of their systems. Some of the other cases referenced this same issue and the old COD and some of its DLC. I am not saying that it has anything to do with COD but more than a few posts mentioned it occuring while playing COD and it sure happened to me while playing it. This could just be a coincidence but it is worth noting. In the end I am just glad I got my system back working again without having to send it back to Sony, but now I am nervous about if it happens again and I can’t fix it. So the question I pose to all of you is, was this just a phantom PS3 fluke or is it something more? You tell me.

happened to me twice on my third ps3 now nothing to do with any game ust a bluray faliure. sony replaced both for free as even out of warrenty with no questions asked so must be a well known problem that they are trying to avoid being its version of the red ring of death by treating customers so good (both were replaced within two days)

    2. AARON says:

WHAT NUMBER DID YOU CALL. I TRIED AND THEY WOULDNT DO ANY BETTER THEN $150 TO FIX THE PS3

    3. Kayman says:

Just wanted to say thanks for this. My ps3 did just this, also while playing COD:WaW. And I started to freak a little. Thanks for the tip.

    4. thatruth2006 says:

No problem Kayman, just hope that yours stays ok, if you read my next article you will see that mine eventually died and I had to get another one. Glad I could help and check out my other reviews and articles.

I’m going to try the trick you metion when i get home it’s crazy becaues this problem just started when i was playing cod wow too. maybe it has something to do with the game

    6. asddfaddf says:

my ps3 won’t load cod waw, i’ve been playing it for awhile and i tried to play it 1 night and it would show up as “loading …” on the bottom right but then it would jsut turn black.

Resistance 2 and LBP work, but just not cod5, and the disk is in perfect condition, do you know what would be wrong?

    7. thatruth2006 says:

This is a tough one, my problem happened while playing COD WAW also. I have also read threads that reported getting this problem while playing COD 4. It makes me wonder if it could have something to do with the Call of Duty discs, as a lot of people have experienced this problem while playing it. Your lucky though at least it reads your other games, mine’s was hosed.

    8. Mcgillatron says:

This exact same thing happened to me playing call of duty today. i’m still trying to get it to work but i have noticed in the last few weeks sincee i got call of duty my ps3 has frozen a lot more frequently. hopefully i can get it sorted

    9. GS430SB says:

I am having the same problem with a 60GB that won’t load COD 5. My game is in perfect shape. I am thinking of contacting the manufacturer of the game to see if perhaps there is a patch? Any ideas? Thanks!

My Ps3 worked just fine for almost 2 years right up until I put COD World at War into it on christmas and it wouldn’t read to begin with , now it doesn’t read any off my games, so what I have now is a great big bulky $670 DVD player that say’s Playstation 3 on it.

    11. IamWhoIAm says:

Ok…i got a similar problem and i would like someone to help me. You see, my problem happened with Fallout 3 today. I was playing in the afternoon (Just after my lil´bro use COD:WaW) and everything was perfect. I turned off my system, and then went out to do some workout on my bike. Was away a couple of hours. I came back, put my ps3 ON, and guess what, no read-y-o of the fallout 3 disc. I turned off and on and all that stuff, waited an hour. Nada. then i put COD in, and to my very surprise, it worked perfectly. then i tried the trick here, Nope, doesn´t work. Now, my fallout 3 disc has some markings it didn´t have when i left, i´m 100% sure. you know, 3-5 dots not even a m.m. I´m wondering if that´s the problem…I can´t call Sony ´cause i live in Venezuela, and games here….well, 116US dollars due to those exchange “#$&$&%. ….so….HEEEEEEEEELP! (sCREAMS LIKE AL LITTLE GIRL KNOWING I WAS 2 TROPHIES AWAY FROM PLATINUM)

    12. chris woods says:

the same thing happened with my ps3 n what game did i b happening 2 play cod5 n i was fuckin good n now ma ps3 wont read n e games but it will play dvds i think the only thing i can do i download a game 2 play it wich is fuckin lame

    13. Jack says:

I had the same issue. Well maybe not the same but close to it. To make a long story short, played cod4 online, system froze, system doesn’t read disk, gives me error code 80010514 or “code of death”. I’m going to go try putting a regular dvd in and seeing if that fixes it. Cheers and I hope your ps3 has no more issues.

    14. al says:

I keep getting error code 80010514 when trying to load discs also, I rang Sony and they said that code was for a network error, even though I wasn’t even online and the game I was trying to load is not an online game, Ive tried everything to get it going but nothing has done the trick. Cost of the repair is $315 AU with 3mth warranty, so i think ill just end up getting a 360 instead for $299 brand new. SONY SUX

    15. ashley says:

hmmm it happend to me while playing COD WAW also lol

but i have to get a new one on tuesday lol hmmm cod waw must have some wired isue lol i rang sony they said its verry weird why its happend so they sdaid they will replace it hope it dosnt happen again i cant play any game it just says loading on top right then keeps loading no game comes on hmm

    16. ashley says:

and it dosnt read any other of my discs :( i got to wait till tuesday to get a replace

    17. Katharina says:

My husband has a similar problem to this. The PS3 will not load any games, it was play dvds though. I have just put in on a full restore to see if this helps, but I don’t hold out much hope, going by previous posts. I am really annoyed as I bought him this 1 year and 1 month ago, so it is 1 month outside warranty. It is a lot of money when you consider the cost of the console and games, especially as this christmas I bought him Guitar Hero world tour. I have told him to ring Sony as it is only my husband that plays the thing and that is only occassionally, once a week tops. Therefore I feel that it hasn’t had much wear.

    18. christine says:

Omg, I am really annoyed!!! My son’s ps3 is doing the same thing. It saying game loading but does not read any games. Right after we started playing cod waw. I really believe it has something to do with these cod waw discs. I already contacted Sony and they sent me a box so we can send it back for repair. Charging me $150.00 for repair, I guess the $500.00 was not enough for them. lol but this sucks. I am wondering if people should start letting the maker of cod war about this.

    19. mike hinds says:

You can actually buy a lens and replace it yourself. The part number is a KES-400A. I bought mine from http://www.consumerdepot.com Here is a video that shows you how to replace it http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2348144/sony_ps3_wont_read_fix_will_not_read_disc_repair_no_read_discs/

    20. Sean says:

new discs will not work. try deleting all of your save game, and every other waw file. your files have probably been corrupted. try starting a new game with all fresh files and profiles.

    21. Ryan says:

I was playing Blitz The League about a half an hour ago. my dog knocked my ps3 on the ground and i picked it up, and when i tried to play the game, it froze. i turned off my ps3, restarted my ps3, and nothing will work. it will not read any games. i dont have 150 dollars to pay and get it fixed, what should i do??? i have had the ps3 for 13 months so the warranty expired a couple weeks ago. talk about bad luck

    22. Danny says:

I was playing cod5 on my ps3, then i turned my ps3 off as usual and went out for a few hours. When i came back, i went on cod and the startup screen froze. i re booted my ps3 loads of times, and realised it works on my other account on the ps3, but not the one that i usually play on. im kinda worried. can anyone help me?

    23. cmeb says:

      Possible Work Around

We were having the same problem. finally found a way around it. Not perfect mind you, but it works. The disc still wont load the regular way, BUT if you go to “life with playstation” then when it starts to load, hit the PS button and exit out. Then go back and look for your game icon under games. This way it works for us.

Sure, we want it to just load like it SUPPOSED to, but since it works okay this way, we just aren’t into spending the $$$.

    24. Davis says:

this happend to me this last friday.. and what the werid thing is that i have had no problems with my ps3 but i bought cod5 about 1-2 months ago and it started actn up and now im here where it wont read my disc.. So $60 could be costing me $150

    25. dk says:

I just got this with no PS3 games disc and Blue Ray disc detection problem today 2/22/09. I got my YLOD last month paid 150, received a “new” system with a small gold sticker saying Q.C. Pass and being so happy I lost track of the 90 day warranty paper, now only PS2 and DVD disc can be detected and loaded, but not detecting any PS3 games/ and BR. I recently played a lot of SF4, maybe 1.5 hour and then do some www surfing and then turn it off and later on and played a nother 1.5 hours. and played 3 hours at night. both of my systems the one with YLOD and this replaced one are both made in China. all my other friends who have no problems 60GB are all made in Japan. I wonder… if you guys also get systems made in China.

    26. pat says:

I had this problem tonight………..thought it was cooked.Got onto the customer care line and spoke to abloke who told me what to do…..turn it on, with no game in. go to ‘game’ and then saved data and delete all WAW data. then go to game data and delete all WAW data.then re boot and the game should load.
If you have bought the map pack, go into the PS network and account management>download lists>WAW data and re-install.

      sorted!!

    27. Matt says:

I had this EXACT same problem.. and I mean EXACT.. it happend just like it did for you. So I tried my PS3 again the day after this happened and it was working again… I had done some of the things people had suggested, but I think it started working after I put a DVD or maybe a PS2 disc in first.. but then the same thing happened after only a few rounds of COD: WaW. Since then I’ve tried it each day for a couple days with no luck. ..and I recently got COD: WaW and the Map Pack.. I guess I’ll try what Pat said. Also, in either my saved game data or game data (I forget which) I recently noticed some corrupted data.. I deleted it but it didn’t help. So hopefully reinstalling COD will.
Also, for anyone else that has this issue, when you put a disc in, do you hear the disc drive spin up?.. because I don’t anymore. I get the little loading circle in the top right but I don’t hear the drive even start spinning (the way I think it was when I first started having this issue). So I guess it could be something other than or more than just my laser lens.. could the disc drive’s motor be dead? ..anyone have any feedback on this?? Oh also, when I was playing a demo last night and hit the PS button on my controller it gave me some message about the disc being invalid or there not being a disc and to insert one (I had COD:WaW in at the time).
As for whether or not this is an issue with COD.. other forums I’ve seen have said this happened with other online games. One post said “it appears that the update may cause failure of the laser lens that reads the disks while the user is playing a game that is connected to the internet. Sony has yet to release anything official about the issue.”
I have one of the original 60GB models, so it’s definitely not under warranty anymore, and I’m not even sure where the recipt is. So if I have to send it in to Sony, I really hope I can get it fixed for free like some other people have said on various forums. I also hope they can just fix it and not replace as I have one of the old models that plays PS2 games (new ones do not).

    28. Matt says:

Oh and to cmeb, you said:
if you go to “life with playstation” then when it starts to load, hit the PS button and exit out. Then go back and look for your game icon under games. This way it works for us.

      ..what is “life with playstation”??

    29. billybob says:

Was watching new James Bond Bluray, halfway through the movie just stopped. Now no discs will spin up. Tried completely dissembling drive and cleaning lens according to the instructions on the internetz. After a lot of stress with the stupid loading gears inside the drive, got it back to the same state:

      1. put in any type of disc , it brings it into the drive
      2. 3 quiet ‘duh duh duh’ mechanical noises come from the drive if you listen closely
      3. disc does not spin up

This was a 40 GB PS3 from two xmas’s ago so it’s out of warranty. The hard drive died last month, had to replace it, now this. Sony.. what went wrong? If anyone has a solution please share this sucks ass.

    30. Matt says:

To follow up.. I tried deleting the game data and saved game data from CoD: WaW and restarting but it didn’t work. I’m guessing my blu ray disc drive is broken.

A bit more info on my issue: I’ve been playing demos since I can’t get any game discs to read and when I press the PS button on my controller while I have a game disc inserted, it will sometimes give me an error message rather than the XMB menu. The 2 messages I’ve seen are “Disc was rejected or can’t be read. Please make sure disc is in drive.” and “The disc has bee ejected. Please reinsert the disc.”

    31. Matt says:

To follow up on my issue.. none of the suggested fixes worked, like deleting my CoD: WaW game data, restoring system default settings, doing a full system restore (formatting the hard drive), etc. So, I sent it in to Sony for repairs, which costs $150 since it’s out of warranty.

    32. Unknown says:

This has not happend to me but one thing that did was I put in a game disk and it wouldnt show up. I later on figgured out I could load up a demo and then press the PS button and the disk would then be avalible to play. Is there a fix to this?

      • Sharif says:

I have the exact same problem as you. not loading game disc, go to demo press ps button and i can play like normal or even if i quit game after being in a demo the disc show up

    33. farid says:

the same thing happend to me but not just on call of duty ON ALL MY GAMES then i went to other account and it works WAT THE HELL DO I DO????

    34. houndead says:

I was having a similar problem on my console,i was playing soul calibour 4 and it was stop running then i put out the disc and the system was late to load the home screen so i swiched it off from the main swich and then when i was trying to play games the system reads the disc (THAT MEANS THAT THE DISC DRIVER WORKS) but when i go to start the game the freaking game canot load and it sais (the game could not be started because of an error) HEEEEEEELP! what sould i do??

    35. ive never hada a single issue with my paly reading discs, ps3 rules

    36. thatruth2006 says:

After taking a look at this, this seems to be an excellent walkthrough on how to replace the lens on the PS3 to fix the disc read error on the PS3. I approve this one.

    37. thatruth2006 says:

This is interesting as it seems to be a bigger problem than people think. Check out my other article about this at:
      http://zoknowsgaming.com/2009/01/22/is-call-of-duty-causing-disc-read-errors-in-ps3s/

    38. thatruth2006 says:

Yeah, Matt I figured that deleting the game data wouldn’t work, I reformatted my whole drive and still nothing. It is either something wrong with the drive or something in the boot instructions that aren’t properly being loaded. If it’s drive failure that’s one thing, but if its something in the boot instructions that isn’t loading properly that would be a huge mess. At this point, if it’s out of warranty I don’t know what else you can do besides send it back and have them fix it, whatever the problem is.

    39. Bill says:

do you know if the laser it still available? went to the consumerdepot link and that part number is not pulling up anything… My 2yr old PS3 just quit reading disks….Any suggestions on how I can get this fixed….

    40. thatruth2006 says:

Well here is a search result for a good search I did
      http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=GGIC%2...

Since its out of warranty, if you don't want to go through that then at this point the only other option is to send it back to Sony and pay the $150 to have it fixed, it sucks this crap should be modular like a PC.
