The John Madden video game franchise turned 20 on Tuesday. The first Madden game in this series debuted in 1988, due to the graphical constraints of the time it was only six on six. To say that the game has come a long way since then is an understatement. The John Madden video game franchise is one of the best selling in the history of video games, effortlessly moving millions of units a year. Even if they hadn’t made some really great changes this year and Madden wasn’t turning 20 it would still move millions of units. Why? Because for gamers such as myself Madden is like an old friend that comes to visit every year.
I am a multi-faceted guy yet when Madden comes out I pretty much get tunnel vision. It’s like I eat, sleep, and dream Madden. Whether it’s online or my franchise, it is all Madden, all the time. When I am not playing Madden I am either thinking about what I can do better the next time I play it or coming up with some new strategy for it. For a while there is just nothing else, I lose days of my life to it. Whether I am testing my skillz against others gamers all over the planet or building the greatest franchise ever put together by pulling off blockbuster trades, signing all the best free agents, and drafting some serious rookies.
It’s hard to find any pattern in the Madden player because it crosses all ethnic , age and socioeconomic groups. Madden gamers are young and old, they are blue collar and white collar, they are black and white, they are simply diverse. For all their differences, they are united in their love for Madden. Madden 2009 hit store shelves on Tuesday August 12th and for me it is bittersweet because I am away from home on business so my Madden just sits in a drawer at Gamestop waiting for me. My body is here but my mind is hundreds of miles away, not long now though Friday is almost here.
Well gotta go to work now, but I want to hear your stories. Is Madden just a video game for you or is it something “more”?
