The GodFather II Review: Is It An Offer You Can’t Refuse?? (4/5 stars)

This is a sequel to The Godfather: The Game, which was also developed and published by EA in 2006.  The Godfather II takes place in the late 1950s and early 1960s over three cities: Havana, Cuba, New York City, and Miami, Florida. The game starts out at a party in Havana, Cuba where all the families are gathered for a business meeting with Hyman Roth. Roth is there to turn over his business interest to the other families as he is “retiring”. After some short conversations, chaos breaks out as the rebels have come to overthrow the government. You are Dominic, a member of the Trapani family and your now tasked with getting the don’s, Michael Corleone included, out of the melee and to the airport. After battling through the crazed streets of Havana you and the Don’s finally make it to the airport and then tragedy strikes. Coming through the gates of the airport, New York Don Aldo Trapani who players will remember as the protagonist of the original is gunned down by a Cuban sniper. And that my friends is how it starts. With Trapani’s death, Michael Corleone knows that all out war will now break out for control of New York and he is not about to let that happen and thus he appoints you as the new Don of New York and tells you to go out and start your own family and show the rest of the families who the real king of New York is and when all is said and done YOU will.

Resident Evil 5 Review: Who Knew Evil Could Be So Good? (5/5 stars) (No Spoilers)

When I heard about the new Resident Evil (RE) I was neither excited nor oblivious, I was more like neutral. The original Resident Evil was a classic that forever changed the face of gaming as we know it. For the youngsters, all those scary games like Alone in the Dark, Deadspace, F.E.A.R and all the rest all owe their existence to RE.  Just like any game that so drastically changes the gaming landscape, the biggest question is can it sustain that brilliance. RE like many other huge series has had its ups and downs but with the release of Resident Evil 5 it has found its way back to greatness.

First Thoughts: Tom Clancy’s HAWX, MLB 2K9, and Resident Evil 5

So with the increase in games coming out over the next few months I may or may not be able to review everything but I still want you guys to know a little bit about what I think of a lot of these games and thus “First Thoughts” is born. Just because you see a game in First Thoughts doesn’t mean I won’t do a full review of it though. So this week we are checking out Tom Clancy’s HAWX, MLB O9, and Resident Evil 5.

So after a bit of a disappointing last outing with EndWar, the Tom Clancy series is back with HAWX, an aerial warfare video game. H.A.W.X. is set in 2012 above the Read more »

KillZone 2 Review: Did It Get Better With Time? (4.2/5.0 stars)

When Killzone 2 was announced I was excited, it was one of those exclusives that I thought could be a gamechanger for the PS3. With the critical acclaim it had garnered before I thought that with all that time and more powerful hardware this game was sure to be a home run. But as they say, this is why we play the games.

Killzone 2 follows the events of Killzone and Killzone: Liberation, and takes place entirely on the planet Helghan, the home-world of the Helghast, who invaded an Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA) colony. Two years after the Helghast assault on Vekta, the ISA has launched an assault on the enemy’s homeworld of Helghan. The ISA goal is to capture the Helghast leader, Emperor Scolar Visari, and bring the Helghast war machine to a halt. You will assume the role of Sergeant Tomas “Sev” Sevchenko, a battle-hardened veteran of the special forces unit Alpha Team, an elite force of soldiers they send in when stuff hits the fan.

Why It Doesn’t Make Sense To Purchase Video From The Playstation Store

After my recent troubles with Sony when it comes to video and spending hours on the phone arguing with Sony reps about this it actually put the whole thing into perspective from me and when you really think about what  you get as Sony has the service setup today there really is not a lot of reasons to buy video content via the PS Store.

Up until recently, the only other time I had purchased video content, was a while back when I rented of all things “Rambo”, the movie wasn’t that good and it was acting kind of glitchy so I never came back for a second try. Then recently during the long Christmas break, I had just watched the entire first season of Burn Notice for free via Hulu and wanted to catch up on the second season before the third season started on January 22nd. So I look around but its not out on DVD yet, so I look in the PS Store and wouldn’t you know they have the entire season so I looked at it and was like this works and bought the entire second season. It actually worked out to be cheaper than any other place. So I went to download the episodes and couldn’t because of  a problem with System Activation, that however is a long saga which I won’t get back into but you can read about it here and here.

So after going through that mess, it occurred to me that the restrictions that Sony is putting on the PS Store when it comes to video far outweighs any benefit you get including price, at least when you actually buy the content because renting is a different story. The problems lies with the fact Sony only allows you to Read more »

Afro Samurai Review: An Old School Hack and Slash (4/5 stars)

First off let me say that I was not excited about this game at all. I had seen the game video, heard that Samuel L. Jackson was doing a lot of voice work, and I had read the previews. To me the game seemed like it was going to be a little cheesy. In all honesty, the only reason I even bought it is because well there was nothing else really good out. This is what you could call a dry month as far as the gaming industry with the only other title worth mentioning that came out this month being Skate 2. With all that said, Afro Samurai was a pleasant surprise.

afsamcover

Afro Samurai is based on the manga and anime series of the same name.  A major component that makes this a great title is it is very well produced and the voice work is amazing. All of the main characters are voiced by the same actors as in the anime: Samuel L. Jackson as Afro & Ninja Ninja, Ron Perlman as Justice, Kelly Hu as Okiku, and John DiMaggio as Brother 2. The soundtrack, scored by Wutang Clan’s “The RZA”, is excellent and exactly what this game needed. It is a combination of  great rap and subtle oriental undertones.

You are Afro Samurai and your are in search of the “Number Two” and the “Number One”, Justice. The game revolves around your quest for not only these people but the sacred headbands they possess. Justice is the “Number One” and he killed your Read more »

Skate 2 Review: So How’s The Ride?? (4.5/5.0 stars)

So I know its been a while but ya boy is back for his first review of the new year and what better title to come back with than the much anticipated “Skate 2″, a follow up to the breakthrough original of the same thing that pretty much killed the Tony Hawk series. I mean after you played the first “Skate”, you were like Tony Hawk was the kiddie pool and Skate was were the big boys played. I don’t want to take anything from Tony Hawk, it was the best and only skate title out for almost a decade, but hey nothing last forever right?

skate_2_cover

Skate 2 is set five years after the events in Skate. During Skate many mysterious disasters (identified as Earthquakes in Skate 2) devastated the city, leaving it in ruins and caused a mass evacuation of the city. The new city has been named New San Vanelona, or New San Van for short. However, instead of a skaters paradise the city used to be, security has been stepped up by Mongo Corp. in order to protect the best parts of the city. But trust, you and Reda and all the rest of the greatest skaters in the world won’t let that stop you. Read more »

Playstation Update 2.60 Hits The Street

No your eyes do not betray you, this most recent update is 2.60 and yes the most recent one before it was 2.53. I have no idea of the reason behind the jump other than maybe the other ones in between were minor ones and were perhaps geographically specific. But anyway you are reading this because you want to know what’s in this new update.

Is Call of Duty Causing Disc Read Errors in PS3’s??

Those are the words that I have been dreading writing for a few months now. I have performed no test, this is just a conclusion based on my own experience combined with hearing the same story from readers of my blog from all over the world. This whole thing started one Sunday when I was playing Call of Duty: World at War when all the sudden the game froze and I was forced to do a hard restart. When I restarted the PS3, the Call of Duty disc did not appear in the menu. I thought nothing of it and turned it off and back on, still nothing. Unplugged it, waited 10 minutes, still nothing.

At this point I started searching the net for possible culprits and solutions and that is where this story began. I found several message boards mentioning the problem, most of the time the people just said they had the same problem and they sent it to Sony but very few mentioned what they were playing when it happened. However, of the few who did an overwhelming majority said the problem occurred while playing Call of Duty, both COD 4 and World at War. Now from personal experience I never had any problems with COD4, but I was playing COD: WAW when it happened to me, so I will be the last person to tell anyone that this happened to while playing COD 4 that it can’t happen. I still wanted to really not believe it, but then after I blogged about it I started getting people saying the same thing happened Read more »
