The latest Nintendo Direct conference has been and gone with no release date in sight for Smash Bros on either Wii U or 3DS, potentially Nintendo’s biggest game of 2014. Recently rumors had been circulating that a Spring date would be forthcoming for the fighting game, but it seems now this is not going to be the case.
Masahiro Sakurai, director of the Super Smash Bros. series, went on Twitter to squash the rumor. Sakurai said there seems to be a rumor that the new Smash Bros. will be released in spring 2014, but this is incorrect. The official release date is sometime in 2014, Sakurai told disappointed Nintendo fans.
Frankly, this doesn’t seem like too much of a surprise, bearing in mind that Mario Kart 8 has been confirmed for a Spring release. With Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze finishing off Winter and Mario Kart coming up a couple of months behind, it would make sense for Nintendo to spread out their first party Wii U releases, leaving room for Smash Bros in the summer (September would be my guess) and then perhaps the new Zelda fighting game and (please??) a new Metroid game for next Holiday season. Which upcoming Wii U game has you most excited?
