PlayStation Homes Updates To Stop In Japan

Sony has announced today that they are going to discontinue updates for the PlayStation Home service in Japan with the last set of content due to drop in September 2013. Other Asian regions will follow suit in March 2014 when they see support for new content withdrawn. PlayStation Home doesn’t appear to be stopping in Europe and North America as Sony has confirmed that both regions will continue to receive new content for the PlayStation Home “weekly.” There was no mention of retiring the service entirely although it is looking like that may happen sooner rather than later.

I doubt that the PlayStation Home will surface again on the PS4

Sony reiterated that the PlayStation Home would receive new content and thanked the communities for their support of the service:

“PlayStation Home in Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe will continue to fully support their vibrant PlayStation Home communities with full weekly publishes, new public spaces, virtual items, and platform features.”

“SCEI would like to thank our respective communities for many years of dedicated participation inside of PlayStation Home and look forward to their continued involvement.”

I would be surprised if Sony kept PlayStation Home going for much longer as I’m not sure that it is that popular anymore and perhaps the time and resources could be put to better use elsewhere. I would also be incredibly astounded if PlayStation Home makes it onto the PS4. What do you make of this move by Sony? Does it signal that the end is near for the service worldwide? I'm a big gaming fan who has been playing games since ever since Pokemon Yellow was released in the year 2000. I'm just glad that there are decent rugby games on the PS3 now after years of nothing. I need another Uncharted game...NOW!!!!!
