Gamescom this year was the first chance that many gamers had to check out the next-generation power of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and it seems that they turned up in thousands. Official attendance figures have now been announced and they show that this year’s show was the most attended ever, with over 340,000 people walking through the doors over the four days that Koelnmesse was open to the public.
Nearly 30,000 of those people were trade visitors, with 6,000 games journalists in attendance. Overall the figures were up 23% from last year, which was already an extremely popular event. In fact, having attended Gamescom last year, it seemed already pretty much full to capacity, with 4 hours lines at times for certain big games. It is difficult to see how so many more people could have turned up this year, although the presence of both Microsoft and Nintendo (both were absent last year), would mean more games to play overall.
“This was games entertainment and business in a new dimension,” said Gerald Bose, President and CEO of the Koelnmesse GmbH, where the show took place. “The Gamescom 2013 in Cologne has clearly underlined its position as the largest games trade fair. As organisers of the fair, we are delighted about this success and would like to thank the affiliated sponsor of the Gamescom, the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) as well as the national and international exhibitors and partners.”
