Microsoft is planning to have the Xbox One controller compatible with PC sometime in 2014. I was confused by the news when I first saw it floating around. It drives me nuts how every PC game is always optimized for the Xbox 360 controller when I prefer to use my PS3 controller. But it’s Microsoft so it’s not like I blame them. The Xbox One controller uses different technology than the Xbox 360 controller. Even though they look the same, they are not.
A Microsoft spokesperson explained what’s different about the Xbox One controller to Gamesbeat:
New wireless protocol, combined with the ability to work in ‘wired’ mode, and the addition of features like Impulse triggers, means that new software has to be written and optimized for the PC. There is also some work that we need to do to make sure that existing PC games that support the Xbox 360 controller will work with the Xbox One controller.
So don’t fret if you love using your Xbox controllers on PC, until the Xbox One controller is compatible with PC you still have your 360 ones.
