A Blizzard sanctioned StarCraft 2 mod, StarCraft Universe, which changes the well-known strategy title into a massively multiplayer online game, is looking to Kickstarter to help with development funding. The mod has been in development for two years and will be released through Battle.net. The setting of the mod is 11 years after the end of StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty which has had grim consequences for Kerrigan. $80,000 is needed by developer Upheavel Arts to finish the game’s first act and then move it into a public beta.
Upheavel Arts has acknowledged that while Blizzard is not affiliated with StarCraft Universe, it has given its full backing to the mod project as mentioned on the Kickstarter page for the title:
“While Blizzard is not directly affiliated with this project’s production, we do communicate with them to submit bug reports and make technical request. They have given their blessing/permission for us to launch this Kickstarter, and they are supporting our efforts by featuring SCU as an Arcade Highlight.”
Players will need a copy of StarCraft 2 in order to play StarCraft Universe which, as previously mentioned, will release via Battle.net and follows on from the prologue which dropped back in February.
