Gamers Pay A ‘Buttload’ Just For A ‘Weed’ Emoticon … Thanks To Steam!

So if you are looking for a visual and fun way to denote a friend of yours, with something that involves the consumption of cannabis, Steam and their Trading Card system has a wonderful solution for you.  A visual one, using an image rather than a paragraph of text.  You know? Something you can look at using your eyes!

With the introduction of Steam’s new Trading Card System, which allows a player to earn incentives such as profile backgrounds, tradable badges, coupons on Steam and even emoticons for just playing games via their program, a digital market has been created of people paying actual cash for items that have no real value in the real world.

One of the most expensive digital items a player can purchase is an actual weed emoticon, which players can achieve by collecting a set of trading cards as they play the game Port Royale 3.  Port Royale 3 is about a young Spanish commoner who had left Spain in order to explore the New World.  With an accident at sea that casts him overboard, he finds himself in the lovely Caribbean city of Port Royale. You play as this lovely Spanish commoner trying to win the heart of a beautiful girl named Elena by either being a merchant or a pirate. Arrrrr!

The price of the weed emoticon gained from playing Port Royale 3 keeps fluctuating on a day-to-day basis, with the most current high price of close to forty dollars. And this is just for an emoticon!

Now according to Gameranx, they say it is a smarter choice to buy the emoticon outright rather than spending time within the game and relying on chance to receive the emoticon. What do you think? Decisions, decisions!
