Fans of the old-school style of ice hockey video games can rejoice as EA has announced that NHL ’94 will be making a return to consoles as it is going to be included as an optional game mode on NHL 14. The original NHL ’94 was the first NHL game to feature actual NHL rosters, teams, and logos as well as removing the fighting and blood at the request of the league. The game has old-time arcade feel to it which actually makes it both accessible and fun for newcomers in addition to the more dedicated ice hockey video game fans.
In the NHL ’94 version that will be on NHL 14 there will be no advertisements on the boards, 16-bit organ tunes, the ice is blue, and the player indicators are stars. On the gameplay front, it is a return to a very simplistic button layout and there are no penalties, which allows for some interesting gameplay to say the least. The game will use NHL 14’s physics so expect to see some brutal ice hockey, especially when there are going to be no penalties involved.
I’m just pleased that this NHL ’94 game mode is being included on the disc instead of being sold separately to the user as expensive DLC. NHL 14 will be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September 2013 and you can view a trailer for the new game mode below:
