Console gamers have been waiting quite a while to get their hands on DayZ, a standalone mod for Arma 2 that become so popular its being spun off into its own game. The developers of the game have said they would be happy to see the game come to any console but there’s a problem. The games creator, Dean Hall, noted that the console maker can’t charge them to do updates to the game and it basically needs to be indie friendly. And there’s the rub.
From what Hall said, it appears that Microsoft will continue to charge developers a fee just to release patches and bug fixes, while he understood that Sony will allow self publishing. The bottom line from Hall is that whatever platform they bring DayZ to has to allow self-publishing and if it doesn’t then it seems DayZ won’t be coming to that platform.
At this point though, it’s still very early in the game and a lot of things could change. But one thing is for sure, if Microsoft doesn’t change their tune with respect to self publishing, DayZ will never see the light of day on the system.
