More than perhaps any other publisher in the console space, Sony seem keen to explore the potential of the free to play revenue model. Having flirted with free to play shooters with Dust 514, the company is now working with Namco Bandai to convert the Tekken franchise into being free to play.
Tekken Universe is scheduled for release today (perhaps following the Sony E3 conference later?) and will be available for download as a PS3 exclusive title. What isn’t known at this time is whether or not Tekken Universe will be a fully fledged one on one fighter, come with chargeable DLC, or even an upgraded version of the card game Tekken Card Tournament, which is already available for mobile devices. Of course Namco is no stranger to this kind of pricing system, as their most recent Ridge Racer game on 3DS shipped with just the bare bones of courses and cars, and made the majority of its sales in additional DLC. Either way, we should know more following E3.
