Of all the popular franchises popular during the 8 bit and 16 bit era, none got teenage boy’s pulse racing like the Contra series. The games on NES, SNES and Genesis/Megadrive were stone cold classics, and made the term ‘run and gun’ define a genre. Unfortunately, since those glory days the series has hit a bit of a hump, with the PS2 era in particular churning up some real stinkers when the series still had so much potential.
If you count yourselves among the series’ fans however, this E3 may provide you with a treat that you were never expecting. Konami registered a new trademark just last week called ‘Contra run and gun’. While a rather odd name for a game, (its like Nintendo calling their next Mario game ‘Super Mario Platform Game’), it is certainly intriguing. Hopefully at the very least we should see some kind of digital reboot of the series, or a Vita/3DS title which would play to the strengths of the handheld machines. Either way, this week should provide some more details.
