The original Prey was an impressive first person shooter from 2006 which merged an interesting story of alien abduction with a great central character and some really trippy portal effects. It was an early release on Xbox 360 and still today is worth playing if you can find it dirt cheap somewhere. Fans have been crying out for a sequel for a long time and thought they had hit the jackpot back in 2011, when the original developer Human Head Studios announced they were working on a follow-up.
Sadly that was the last bit of good news heard about the project, and since that point various stories of woe have emerged, including the likelihood of the game being canned last year. More recently however, new leaks indicate that the game could be now in the hands of Arkane Studios following the success of their title Dishonored from last year. Apparently this follows on from Obsidian being given the reins briefly in a move which didn’t work out.
Inspiration for Prey 2 is said to come from the PC classic System Shock (which also inspired both Bioshock and Dishonored), and the game will be worked on in either Arkane’s Texas or French offices. All of which sounds kind of positive, until you realize that this means the whole game is being worked on from scratch, meaning it may well be a long time yet before we see anything of Prey 2. Game Informer contacted Bethesda (the likely publisher) to attempt to obtain a quote, and were predictably told; “We don’t have any new info to share on Prey 2. We don’t comment on rumors.” Go figure.
