The saga of Zen Pinball just gets more and more complicated. Just discussing the PS3 version for a minute (adding in the Xbox’s FX Pinball will only confuse things even more), originally the Marvel Pinball tables were released as a standalone game, with DLC tables available. Then last year, Zen announced that in a simplification of their offerings, they would launch Zen Pinball 2 on the PS3 and Vita, which would collect together all of the Marvel Pinball tables as well as offering the other themed tables already available on other platforms.
Are you with me so far? This all seemed to make sense, and when the Star Wars pinball tables were released earlier this year they were again collected under the Zen Pinball 2 launcher (see our impressions HERE). Now however, Zen has announced that they will be releasing a standalone version of Star Wars Pinball as well as having the tables still available through Zen Pinball 2! Phew – talk about confusing your customers Zen!
In their defense however, the new standalone game does come with some nifty new features which wouldn’t be possible under the Zen Pinball 2 umbrella. The three existing tables (Clone Wars. Empire Strikes Back and Boba Fett), will be joined by another 7 tables at some point in the future, although the nature of these has yet to be revealed. In addition to this, here are the all-new features offered by Star Wars Pinball:
- You get to choose to support the Galactic Empire or the Rebel Alliance! Once you do, your high scores contribute to the side you choose, creating a Star Wars Pinball community fight for the Balance of the Force! The main game user interface will change dynamically, based on how the community chooses to support each side. You can see who is winning the overall battle at www.starwarspinball.com.
- An XP progression system allowing you to move up the ranks based on Galactic Empire or Rebel Alliance support.
- The game looks, sounds, and IS authentic Star Wars!
If you have already paid for and downloaded the tables for either PS3 or Vita then worry not, you will be able to download the new Star Wars Pinball package for both systems next week. You can also continue to play and enjoy these tables through Zen Pinball 2 if you prefer, although obviously you wont be able to take advantage of the new features.
