Need For Speed Underground Reboot In The Works [RUMOR]

Around here we hear and report on a lot of rumors and for the most part they don’t really move me one way or the other. But this latest one has me quite nostalgic. EGM received the game’s logo picture from an “anonymous” source who claimed that it was part of theĀ Need For Speed Underground box art for the Xbox 360 version. According to the source, the new game will take place in a rebooted but original Bayview setting rather than the one seen in Underground 2. The site went on to say that it has heard chatter of a game developed by Criterion that would be very similar to Underground and return the series to the street racing, car tuning them from its earlier titles. Finally, the site goes on to highlight that several Criterion employees LinkedIn profiles mention the fact they are working on an unannounced racing title expected sometime this year. As most of you know, Criterion has been behind the reboot of previous Need For Speed games including Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted.

Honestly, I didn’t really care about those other reboots and though they were solid I didn’t care much for the original versions so I wasn’t that moved, but Underground is different. When that game came out I was in college and while most of us didn’t even care for most of the game modes, but we became addicted to Drag Mode. This was normally head to head, and we took it to the maximum. Everyone used to spend hours in their rooms, customizing their cars and running through every course. It had some many customization options that nobody’s ride seemed the same, everyone had a different style of customizing that made the cars unique. Once we put them on the track, it took a masterful combination of skill and timing to come up with the victory. We got so good in fact that it became serious business, especially when we were racing for pink slips. The crazy thing about that was that even when you won and got somebody else’s car, you never held on to it for long because you could never get it to do what they could. The game was just great like that, in fact as I’ve said before I think it’s the best head to head racing game I’ve ever played.

Anyway enough reminiscing. As for the validity of this rumor, EA as usual is not commenting. The story took a twist when Criterion creative director posted a pair of tweets denying this was true, you can take those for what you like. It wouldn’t be the first time a developer or publisher has denied something that turned out to be true, guess we’ll just have to wait and see. With that said this is one rumor that I for one hope is true.
