The other day Sony quietly released PS3 system software version 4.40, but at the time they didn’t say what it did. Many believed that it was just another stability patch but it seems that this one actually enabled some real new functionality in addition to stability updates. The biggest thing is that its makes preparations to allow PS3 owners to download content they purchase from the online store to their PS3. The feature isn’t active yet and won’t be until May 2013. When it does go live though they will release a detailed guide on how to use it. Now here’s the kicker. This news come courtesy of the EU PlayStation update page, on the U.S. PlayStation update page there is no mention of that particular feature. The US page does mention closed caption though, which the EU page does not. Confused yet?
At this point, it’s not known if that was an honest mistake or if the feature won’t be available in US at the same time it becomes available for Europe. Hopefully Sony will provide clarity on that soon. Here are the official update details from the European post and the US post combined, the US description is exactly the same except it doesn’t have the part about the new download capability but does have the Closed Caption part making it look pretty unspectacular in comparison.
