Recently we brought you the news that a Japanese price drop has done wonders for PlayStation Vita sales in its home territory, and how we were hoping for a similar move in the west. Whilst that official price drop has yet to be announced, reports across the US are suggesting that Sony IS discounting the 3G model in their retail stores.
Several Sony stores have been reported as cutting the price of the 3G bundle, which includes an 8GB memory card and PSN game when you sign up for a data bundle with AT&T. The original price of this system was $299.99, and these stores are now showing a reduced price of $199.99 which is frankly a pretty impressive deal.
There seems to be some confusion in the stores that were contacted by website Joystiq, as to whether this is a temporary flash sale or a more permanent state of affairs, or even whether the 3G model was being discontinued altogether which some store managers told them. The 3G model of the Vita was always the least popular of the two SKU’s, and realistically there isn’t a whole lot of functionality that is offered by the 3G model over the Wi-Fi only console. It might make sense if Sony is planning a soft re-launch of the handheld to tie in with its PS4 compatibility if they simplify and only offer the Wi-Fi model moving forward.
