Staying with the Ubisoft theme for a sec, additional news from yesterday’s Ubisoft earnings call has revealed that a new Assassin’s Creed game is already in development. CEO Yves Guillemot was quoted as saying that the game will be releasing in fiscal year 2014, which means any time April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014. I’m almost positive we see the next game this year, Ubisoft has released a new AC game every year since 2009 (AC2)Not surprisingly, the next Assassin’s Creed will feature a brand new protagonist and will also be set in yet another time period. Guillemot said that he expects it to be “another major leap forward for the franchise”.
Now if you are like me, you might be concerned that the game’s quality will drop because they are just punching these things out year after year but Guillemot spoke to that fact as well. He said that the way that Ubisoft is maintaining quality on the different Assassin’s Creed installments is by having multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the product, which allows each team several years of development time. He closed out his note about the new game by saying that more details would be available “very soon”.
I can’t lie, Ubisoft has done a great job at maintaining the quality of the franchise through the last few yearly installments. Assassin’s Creed III was arguably the best game in the franchise to date and while I thought the excellent guild feature that was introduced in Brotherhood was not used properly, it was superior in almost every other aspect.
So it looks like we are set for another big E3 reveal of the next installment in the franchise. For those of you that played Assassin’s Creed III, what do you think about this news? Are you cool with Ubisoft dropping a new AC game every year as long as they maintain the quality or do you feel like it’s hurting the franchise by not even giving fans time to miss it?
