Classic!

If you’ve gamed for a long time and consider yourself a fan of the fighting game genre, then you would’ve probably brushed shoulders with the Streets of Rage franchise at some point. The side-scrolling beat ’em up has become a classic, enough so that a new entry of the series was on its way off the production line until it was untimely axed.

The canned title was in the spotlight again however, when a gameplay video posted online gave us a brief glimpse into what the game was about before it was axed. In response to this, Ruffian Games studio head Gaz Liddon posted a YouTube video showing the previously leaked prototype gameplay, this time with audio – which you can view below – and his thoughts on the game.

Here are some scenes from a playable prototype. It was something we built very rapidly and represents pre-pre-pre-pre (lots of pres) pre-Alpha quality. Even so it has a certain charm.

What’s the story behind it all? Like a lot of developers we work on a lot of different prototypes, they’re just not usually shown in public. In this case an older version of the same video was leaked last week which came as a bit of a surprise if I’m honest. As it had no sound I thought there wouldn’t be any harm sharing a version with audio.

From what you can see below, it doesn’t look half bad. Many are shouting for the game to releases as a downloadable title, something I’m sure many would buy in today’s market if it’s a reasonable price, myself included.

When not fighting crime, I dabble in the art of online journalism. Alright, maybe it's not as exciting as headbutting everyday felons like a modern Bruce Wayne, but I need something that doesn't involve bludgeoning something. Get my kicks playing on a fat 80gb PS3, really need an upgrade......and a shave.
