We are so glad that BioWare saved us the trouble of reporting about rumors of the next Mass Effect’s development. In true Bioware fashion, the company has come out on its official blog and confirmed that the next Mass Effect game is currently in development at BioWare Montreal. The studio’s director, Yanick Roy, dropped the news saying:
“The next Mass Effect game is already in development, driven by the team here in Montreal,” wrote Roy. “This is the goal we have been working toward for years now, and every member of our team is proud, excited, and humbled to take on the responsibility for the next game.”
In terms of development duty, this is a shift as Mass Effect 3 was developed at BioWare Edmonton with development lead by Casey Hudson. To quell fans concerns over what might be lost in a transition like this, Roy went on to say:
“To ensure a proper and effective transition, we’ll continue to be supported by the Edmonton studio through the game’s development, working with and learning from them on some critical initiatives. On top of that, Casey remains the executive producer, but he will have a project director under him, working in Montreal, leading our development team and making day-to-day decisions for the game. We all care very much about Mass Effect and make our decisions based on what’s best for the game.”
So now you know that Mass Effect 4 or whatever they decide to call it is actually a thing, which saves you countless hours of reading about how it might be a thing or might not be a thing. Either way, consider it time saved. The only other major fact we know about the next Mass Effect game is that it will be built on DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, the same engine that powers the Battlefield franchise. BioWare should be getting pretty familiar with the engine since they are also using it to develop Dragon Age III. All previous Mass Effect games have run on the Unreal Engine 3, which is still used to power some of today’s most popular games. In closing out his post, Roy gave fans a glimpse of what to expect from the next game saying:
“We are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.”
Not much more is known about the game and there is a very high probability that it will be a next generation release, I personally don’t see them releasing another Mass Effect on this gen, at least not with them as the lead platform.
