Twitch, the world’s largest video platform and community for gamers, has announced its partnership with Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) to integrate live broadcasting functionality into SOE’s upcoming games. The first game to feature the ability to stream gameplay directly to the Twitch platform with a single click will be PlanetSide 2, the highly anticipated massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS), which will launch in North America and Europe on November 20, 2012.
PlanetSide 2, which is a free-to-play title with optional content available for purchase in the marketplace, offers an unprecedented gaming experience. Players battle in massive environments alongside and against thousands of players engaging in intense air and ground combat that spans the alien planet of Auraxis. Scheduled to deploy in an external beta game update for players to begin testing this weekend, PlanetSide 2 marks the inaugural title in the Twitch and SOE partnership. Future relevant SOE titles will look to incorporate Twitch integration as well.
But Twitch isn’t stopping there and if comments from Matthew DiPietro, VP Marketing of Twitch are to be believed, the partnership with SOE is just the beginning. DiPietro went on to say:
“We’re in discussions with the industry’s largest developers and publishers, so there’s no question that integrating turn-key live broadcasting into games is the future of this industry. With SOE being the first to illustrate the appeal of instant in-game streaming on Twitch, we couldn’t ask for a better partner to validate this movement.”
So who knows, you might just see this feature turn up in the next Halo or Battlefield? If this works well enough, a few years from now we may not be able to remember a time when it wasn’t this way. In any case, it should be interesting to see how well this works, who knows we may be looking at the beginning of a trend.
Now what we want to know from you is whether or not this is something that you think will add real value to your gameplay or not. Hit up the comments and share you thoughts.
