Sony Shares Some Interesting PlayStation Plus Stats‏

While the PlayStation 3 stays free-to-play online unlike its counterpart Xbox 360, there is a price to pay to get some of the more premium features on Sony’s console. PlayStation Plus was created to give users more gaming content, either it be games for free, free trials of the newest titles, half price of some seasoned games and a range of other media content. So how well has the premium service done since its incarnation? Well Sony got in touch with Kotaku recently to give the skinny on some interesting stats the service has reached.

Still going strong!

Amazingly, just like Microsoft and their Xbox Live Gold service, Sony refused to make public the total amount of PlayStation Plus members, but Jack Buser, senior director of PlayStation Digital Platforms, said it isn’t a sign of bad business. He did say that Sony “are extremely proud of the number”, reclining to answer if the number was in the seven-figure region. Luckily, Sony did have the grace to share some stats. Check them out below!

PlayStation Plus Statistics:

  • 13 million: The number of hours of play-time that games in Plus’ Instant Game Collection (the batch of free games offered to Plus subscribers) in the two months after the IGC was launched in early June.
  • 12 million: The number of Trophies players unlocked in Instant Game Collection games in those two months.
  • 93%: The percentage of players who intend to renew the service, according to a Sony survey (as long you renew Plus, you keep access to the games in the IGC; if you cancel, you lose access).
  • 97%: the percentage of Plus users who tell Sony’s survey-takers that they’re extremely happy with the survey (ticking one of the top two boxes, or options, when answering how happy they are with the service). Sony says this is up 50% over a prior survey, from presumably before the IGC began.

I for one never bought into the premium service the PlayStation offers, but I still find my friends list full of the little yellow plus signs. Looking at the stats, I’m starting to think I should jump on the wagon.

When not fighting crime, I dabble in the art of online journalism. Alright, maybe it's not as exciting as headbutting everyday felons like a modern Bruce Wayne, but I need something that doesn't involve bludgeoning something. Get my kicks playing on a fat 80gb PS3, really need an upgrade......and a shave.
