The sheer amount of content and new features launching with Call of Duty: Black Ops II is more than impressive if you take previous installments into consideration. Not just from a gameplay perspective either, on the technical side the game is well furnished to cater to the millions of fans who will undoubtedly pick up the shooter. We can now add another to the list, with PlayStation 3 users getting the delightful option to install texture packs onto the PS3 hard drive … Fancy!
According to Treyarch’s David ‘Vahn’ Vonderhaar who posted through the Black Ops II community forums, PS3 users have the option to install textures onto the console’s hard drive. Unfortunately it will have no boost on performance and will only take some of the slack off the Blu-ray disc drive. Just like Black Ops, the game pre-caches so you don’t have to install the packs.
Vahn’s post read, “When we explained to PS3 folks that installing to the HDD wouldn’t necessarily give us any significant performance gains, they explained back that the issue is they play so much it puts constant stress on the Blu-ray drive and wears them out. It’s a non-trivial amount of HDD space to install all the textures. I don’t want to get into exactly numbers because anything can, and does change during development.”
So Treyarch is drifting into uncharted territory this year adding some new features in Black Ops II, as long as they keep it optional it shouldn’t ruffle to many feathers. What do you make of it? Let us know in the comment section or send us a Tweet over on our Twitter!
