Chop this one up to a HUGE rumor but it’s so juicy we had to tell you about it. According to an “Anonymous Source”, Half-Life 3 will make a dramatic break from the franchise’s familiar linear gameplay. Instead, Gordon Freeman will take his next adventure on the road in a full-scale open world environment.
The source went on to say that development on the title has been chaotic, as the game originally started out as more of a traditional shooter before shifting gears to focus more on exploration and puzzles. In addition, Half-Life 3 will reportedly have quest assigning NPCs that are targeted at giving the game a different feel.
For my money, if it’s not broke then don’t fix it. I see no reason to mess with a formula that has worked so well over the years, I’m not saying that they shouldn’t try to innovate because they should, but they shouldn’t try to completely reinvent a franchise that was already brilliant in the first place. As we said, we’ll keep an eye on this one for you as the final bit of info from the source has the game dropping “after 2013”, so if its true we should hear something about it by maybe E3 2013 assuming an early 2014 release.
In any case, we want you all to hit up the comments and let us know your thoughts on this, would you want Valve to take Half-Life 3 in an open world direction or should the game stick to its roots?
