There has been a great deal of comment lately regarding the lack of exclusive game series for the XBOX 360. Whilst Gears of War, Forza, Fable and (arguably) Alan Wake fly the flag for Microsoft’s system, there is one franchise that remains as popular as ever, more than 10 years since its original release. That franchise is of course Halo, and it comes as no surprise to find that Microsoft plans on keeping it around for a long time yet.
Halo 4 is due out on the 360 before the end of the year, and plans are already afoot for Halo’s 5 and 6, presumably on the next-gen XBOX system. According to website Fusible however, the Halo legacy may continue possibly even into the NEXT next-gen, with websites registered for Halo 7,8 and 9. The majority of these sites are .org or .net domains, with some of the .com websites for Halo 6 and Halo 8 for example still owned by third parties.
Of course just because these web domains have been purchased doesn’t necessarily mean we will ever see Halo 9 for example, it’s just that Microsoft don’t want a lengthy battle to purchase the domain back from an opportunist in a few years time, if and when they do decide to make that game. It’s also likely that future Halo titles may be more in the vein of Reach and ODST, exploring the battle with the Covenant from the point of view of characters other than Master Chief and therefore not being a numbered entry into the series. Either way though, its clear that we will be playing Halo games on Microsoft hardware for a long while yet.
