After early rumors slated the release of the Wikipad to sometime next year, a cloud of doubt was cast on when it would actually hit stores. Luckily an announcement has been made and we can reveal the release date for the high-tech tablet as October 31st this year, yes people this year! If you want to make sure you pick one of these bad boys up on the day of release, you can now pre-order the Wikipad from retailer GameStop for a steep price of $499.
“For those that purchase or pre-order a Wikipad at GameStop, their tablet will have access to valuable extras including exclusive free, full-length game titles. The Wikipad is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and will support PlayStation Mobile platform,” said Fraser Townley, President of Sales for Wikipad, Inc.
The Wikipad will allow users to play nearly everything Android based, so the list of games to choose from is endless and will only grow with the release of the Android powered Ouya console next March. The device is also PlayStation certified, meaning it is compatible with PlayStation mobile games and sports an attachable console-quality gamepad controller. This is all played across a 10.1-inch HD display with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of flash storage, but is micro SD compatible – so you can bump up the memory if needed.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Wikipad to launch this unique new gaming tablet,” said Joe Gorman, vice president of GameStop’s mobile business unit. “We love the innovation and know our customers are excited to see it in action.”
With such a hefty retail price, it will be interesting to see how the Wikipad goes up against the already established tablets that are selling for way cheaper. Would you consider shelling out $499 for the Wikipad? Let us know in the comment section below.
