A lot of video game franchises seem to be celebrating birthdays lately, as we have seen anniversaries for Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Final Fantasy and now Metal Gear Solid. Whereas the majority of those celebrations have been looking back however, a Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event in Japan today has certainly been looking to the future, with a couple of big-name releases.
Firstly, and most excitedly, a brand new open world game featuring Snake (naked we assume?) and using the amazing FOX engine was unveiled. Although no screenshots or video has so far leaked from the event, we do know that it is titled ‘Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes’, and was demoed on a current gen PC. It is also supposedly heading for XBOX 360 and PS3, rather than any next gen consoles. Twitter accounts mentioned real stealth gameplay, crawling under search lights in the rain for example. Consider us officially stoked for this game, and we will bring you any further details as soon as we get them. In the meantime check out this piece of game artwork, provided by Famitsu magazine.
Also announced at the event was a mobile game called Metal Gear Solid Social Ops. A fully 3D experience, it is being targeted at all smartphones and tablets and should be released before the end of the year. It will also be playable at Tokyo Game Show this year.
As if that wasn’t enough Snake news, we also heard that a film based on the series is definitely in the works, and being produced by Avi Arad for Columbia Pictures. No more details at this point, but the producers pedigree with super hero movies (Iron Man, The Amazing Spiderman etc) give a hint as to the kind of movie we can expect.
Last but not least, Sony took the opportunity to announce Raiden as the newest playable character in PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale! Despite many people preferring Snake, Raiden’s inclusion was perhaps more to be expected with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on the way, and he does seem pretty badass in his cyborg get-up, battling Parappa the Rapper….
