The year for the gaming fan can pretty much be separated into three high points, roughly spaced out through the seasons. The winter/holiday period brings with it usually the most impressive influx of new games and plenty of excuses to stay indoors when the weather is shocking and play all those new titles that loved ones have thoughtfully bought for you. Late Spring brings with it the expectation of E3 and the crazy rumors that seem to spring from everywhere. Massive anticipation usually morphs into disappointment as fatigue from watching every press conference live and only enjoying 10 minutes from each one kicks in.
The third segment of the gamer’s year is reserved for the excitement and news coming out of Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show. Both are usually lighter on stellar news than E3, but are probably a better place to check out all the games heading our way during the holiday period, and so it all begins again. Hold your horses though gamers – first we need to get through five days of European madness, and this year you can come along for the ride with us!
That’s right, for the first time ever your friendly neighborhood ZKG reporter (that’s me, by the way) is winging their way over to Sunny Cologne to drink beer and eat sausages. Err, I mean check out the new game announcements and play the latest titles to bring you the best insight. Obviously. So what should you expect from Gamescom this year? What are we going to bring you from the show floor? Thankfully guys you have come to the right place as our Gamescom 2012 coverage starts right here.
Perhaps planning their own events at some point in the foreseeable future, both Microsoft and Nintendo have opted out of Gamescom and TGS this year. Although this is a shame, it leaves the floor open for Sony in particular to show their upcoming wares, and the likes of Ubisoft who impressed many at E3, to really focus on their upcoming games like Assassin’s Creed 3 and Far Cry 3. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is also set to make a massive impression of course and we will be bringing you hands-on impressions of the single and multiplayer modes on what is sure to be this Christmas’ biggest selling game. The Wii U will not be entirely absent from Gamescom however as Ubisoft will likely be showing off both ZombiU and Rayman Legends, so rest assured your favorite website will also be bringing you our first impressions of Nintendo’s new baby.
What about Sony though? As already mentioned they will be the only one of the ‘big 3’ displaying at the show and they will be certain to make the most of it. We have already heard that a couple of new games will make their debut and we will certainly bring you the news on them as soon as possible, with rumors rife that one may be an action based Bladerunner/Cyberpunk style game. We are seriously hoping that the Vita will have a few more titles to show off as well, with Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified in particular expected to shine. In many ways it could be the biggest hope for the handheld this year.
Of the big Sony exclusives, The Last of Us, God of War: Ascension and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale are perhaps the most anticipated and we will be devoting a serious amount of gaming time to each one. The Last of Us in particular is something I cannot wait to get stuck into and rest assured although the queues will likely be brutal we will make sure we check out the game in some serious detail. Due to its European pedigree it is also more than likely that some more of Beyond: Two Souls will be shown, hopefully in a playable state. If this is the case then again look out for some in-depth coverage on this site.
We have already mentioned Ubisoft, but EA, Capcom and Konami amongst others will also have impressive showings, and we have been promised an exclusive look at the Dead Island sequel that we will be able to tell you all about later on in the month. Resident Evil 6 will likely have a massive impact on the show floor and we are expecting to check out both the action and horror inspired sections of the game.
So that was a very brief run-down of the games and companies we are looking forward to seeing in Germany, but exactly what coverage can you expect from ZKG? Well, the conferences kick off on Tuesday so expect to see us covering the news from them, then you can also look forward to a picture filled article telling you all exactly what it’s like to attend biggest game show in the world (fact!). Following that we will have some brief hands-on impressions and pictures from the show itself, followed by some really detailed previews of the hottest games from the weekend onwards into next week as we slowly recover from the experience. As ever this site is run for you guys, so if there is anything in particular I haven’t mentioned that you really want to see us cover from Germany then please let us know. In the meantime, Auf Wiedersehen!
