With the new Tomb Raider reboot set to blow previous installments out of the water, with a brand new game engine, a new developer and a high-profile voice actor to take on the role of protagonist Lara Croft, the game is well furnished so to speak. Well it seems things are only getting better for the adventure title, with Rhianna Pratchett taking lead writer duties on the Tomb Raider reboot, with 14 years of writing experience to back it up.
English-born Pratchett has been writing for and about video games for over the past decade and is a steal for developer Crystal Dynamics. Previously a games journalist(so there is hope!), Pratchett is known for her passion and skills for creating immersive stories into the narratives of several highly successful video games, one of the reasons Crystal Dynamics wanted her for Tomb Raider. Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics had this to say about the talented writer:
“Rhianna has been working on the game with the narrative from its early start. She has brought a unique perspective to the project and helped us explore the character origins of Lara Croft. I am convinced Rhianna has brought a depth and credibility to Lara, a heroine who will really connect with today’s gamers.”
Pratchett also had her own thoughts about working with Crystal Dynamics, saying, “I grew up playing Tomb Raider, uncovering the world’s secrets and unearthing its treasures. I have lived and died as Lara Croft, but nothing comes close to re-writing her.” It is a momentous task no doubt, Lara Croft is an iconic character not just for the games franchise, but for gaming in general. Pratchett welcomes the challenge saying:
Seldom do we get the opportunity to reimagine and reinvent a legend, so getting my narrative hands on Miss Croft was a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. It was going back to the genesis of video game action heroines and exploring how to make such an iconic character meaningful and relatable for gamers today.
With many awards, including a BAFTA nomination for Story and Character and a Writers’ Guild of Great Britain award for Best Videogame Script, the script will be in good hands. If you want to catch a glimpse of the lead writer, she will be participating on two panels during San Diego Comic-Con, both on Saturday, July 14, so head down and ask some questions about what Lara Croft will be getting up to.
