We recently brought you the news that Dreamworks Studios acquired the rights to create a film based on the Need For Speed series last month. Well the studio has shockingly set a release date for the movie according to website Deadline, with it being fast-tracked to launch on February 7, 2014, with no reasons for the sudden speed up in production given. It comes as unusual news, considering the constant delays of films and games we hear about weekly, so this will be a big treat for fans of the Electronic Arts racer.

No much has changed since the announcement, we still have no idea what the storyline will be about, with Dreamworks saying it will not be based on one particular game from the series. Act of Valor director Scott Waugh is still behind the camera directing the film, as is George and John Gatins who wrote the script. John is also producing the film with Mark Sourian. No actors have been cast yet, but expect the rumors to come through the grape-vine soon enough.

The film is described as a “fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise. In Need for Speed, the cars are hot, the racing is intense and the story keeps players at the edge of their seat.” Looking to take it to other racing film franchise ‘The Fast and the Furious’, which will be a tough nut to crack, with the last installment doing well in the box office.

Remember to check out the Need For Speed Facebook Page to have your say on what cars make it into the film, with some wild suggestions already posted by fans, from Bugatti Veyrons to Mini Coopers being mentioned. If you can’t wait until 2014 for the film, you can pick up Need For Speed: Most Wanted, which hits stores on October 30 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, PlayStation Vita and mobile devices. Let us know in the comments who you think should be cast in the Need For Speed film!

When not fighting crime, I dabble in the art of online journalism. Alright, maybe it's not as exciting as headbutting everyday felons like a modern Bruce Wayne, but I need something that doesn't involve bludgeoning something. Get my kicks playing on a fat 80gb PS3, really need an upgrade......and a shave.
