Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMO from EA set 3500 years before the Star Wars movies, is now free to play until your characters reaches level 15. Free trials are not uncommon for The Old Republic but they have usually been time restricted or as rewards to the dedicated few who guide their character above level 50. More good news comes in the fact that people who participated in previous free trials will be eligible for access to this new one.
If you want to meet up with your friends in-game then you can do so by playing via a flashpoint, or you can just compete against whomever you please in PvP warzones. The free trial gives you the opportunity to see the origins of the eight different character classes that are playable in the game so there is plenty for you to get through by the time that level 15 limit is reached. So why this generosity from EA? The most likely reason is because of a big drop-off in user numbers.
The Old Republic lost 400,000 subscriptions between February and May, which is a worrying loss no matter how you look at it and maybe EA felt that this free trial could be a way of getting new subscribers or even enticing old ones back. Failing that it is possible that the whole game could follow in the footsteps of DCUO in becoming free-to-play. BioWare Austin has said it might but what are your opinions about the possibility of The Old Republic being free-to-play? Hit up the comments and let us know.
