Continuing on with the recent trend of video games making their way from their rightful homes on consoles to the silver screen, CBS Films has signed a deal with Square Enix for the rights to create a movie adaptation of Deus Ex, with the script heavily based on the 2011 title ‘Deus Ex: Human Evolution‘. Deus Ex is known for its lovable main character Adam Jensen, so CBS Films will need to be spot on when casting the character.
“As is clear from the wild success of the game, Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal know how to exceed their audience’s expectations by engineering incredible worlds, said Terry Press, co-president of CBS Films. “No one knows Human Revolution like the team that created it and we look forward to working with them from day one to make a film adaptation worthy of the Deus Ex name.”
“As the millions of fans who have played the Deus Ex games for more than a decade will tell you, these games catapult you into a universe that is stimulating, engaging, and relevant,” says Phil Rogers, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Europe. “We’re firm believers in building strong partnerships, and so we’re thrilled to be working with CBS Films on bringing the unique Deus Ex experience to the big screen.”
Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh are slated to produce the film, both have worked on video to film adaptations in the past, with Askarieh working on 2007’s Hitman and producing the upcoming Kane & Lynch. Lee is working on Lego: The Piece of Resistance for Warner Bros. which will bring those little Lego pieces to life with a CGI and Live-Action mixture, but is more known for his work on The Departed and The Ring.
So we can add Deus Ex to the already jam-packed list of games making the profitable leap to the box office, with the video game industry already making more money than films yearly, film companies ain’t going to say no when publishers come knocking.
