If you don’t play video games and listen to Lady Gaga (no offense to Gaga fans just saying), then you’re on the wrong website. If you do play video games and listen to Hard Rock, then grab a seat. Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor has joined forces with Black Ops 2 developer Treyarch to write and compose the theme song for the upcoming futuristic shooter. You might Know Reznor for recently bringing home an Oscar for his work with Atticus Roseon on ‘The Social Network’ film soundtrack, also composing the soundtrack for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Needless to say, he has talent in that area.
Reznor will only compose the one song however, the rest of the game’s soundtrack will be composed by well-known Jack Wall of Mass effect 2 fame. Reznor described the theme song as an “aggressive sounding” rock track, which will fit the setting the game portrays. “There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface,” said Reznor about the song. “So it didn’t make sense to have a gung-ho patriotic feeling kind of theme song. It has to feel weighty.”
Reznor agreed without hesitation when Treyarch came forward asking for his talents. The rocker himself is a gaming fan and holds Call of Duty in high regard, “I have always looked to that franchise as the cutting edge of what seemingly unlimited budgets and full-on not cutting any corners can do in the current day and age,” he said. His love for the game only adds to the creativity he can bring and is only bolstered by his previous work with games in the past, with him working on music for Quake and first person shooter veteran Doom.
The soundtrack can be just as important as any other content a game offers and having Trent Reznor on-board for Black Ops 2 will be a big boost to the games experience when released, but also from a marketing stand point it will be good for those involved, especially Activision. Black Ops 2 will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC from November 13th. Let us know in the comments if you are looking forward to the Black Ops 2 theme song and soundtrack.
