Activision has confirmed that Terminal Reality is developing a first-person action title based on AMC’s hit television series, The Walking Dead. The game will tell the story of brothers Daryl Dixon (the player’s character) and Merle, as they try to make their way to Atlanta (a city allegedly safe from the undead). Zombies will hunt the brothers using sight, sound, and smell. Players can choose between fighting zombies or using stealth to try to get past them undetected.
Resources will be scarce so players will need to keep a keen eye on their limited resources including food, ammunition, and supplies. As Daryl, players will encounter a number of characters along the way, who may want to help him or possibly hurt him. Those are just a few of the decisions that players will have to make as they try to survive the attack of the undead.
The game is scheduled to be released in 2013 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. At this point the game looks like a full retail release since it actually has holder box art but we’ve heard not details either way. I understand that Telltale Games has found a lot of success with the franchise recently and AMC is looking to try to capitalize on that as much as possible but Activision has to be extremely careful here. We know that Activision knows how to make a heck of a shooter but that doesn’t mean they can translate the raw grit and terror that is The Walking Dead franchise. They would be smart to not underestimate the level of talent at Telltale Games and what it’s taking for them to do what they are doing. Activision’s The Walking Dead game has to be more than a great shooter, the story and the characters have to be well-developed and complex because that is what fans of the franchise will demand.
