Telltale Planning A Second Season Of The Walking Dead Game, First Season Will Become A Full Retail Release Once Complete

Based on the highly positive response and huge sales this may not come as a surprise to some of you. Telltale Games has confirmed that once the five episode season of The Walking Dead is completed, the episodes will be packed up and released as a full retail game. So if you are one of those folks who don’t like waiting to see how things end, if you hold back a bit you can pick it up and play through it as one big gruesome experience.

On another note, Telltale also confirmed that the current five game episode arc will not be the last game set in the Walking Dead universe. They revealed that this may in fact be the start of a franchise. “We believe there is no better company than Telltale to bring complex narrative IP to interactive entertainment,” senior vice president of marketing Steve Allison said in a statement to Polygon. “Our first episodic game series based on The Walking Dead has sold nearly 1.7 million episodes to consumers in just our first 8 weeks with no signs of slowing down. We have three more episodes to go with Episode 3 targeted for August as we confirmed yesterday. “Following the digital release of our fifth episode we will also be coming to North American retail shortly thereafter and this will not be the last The Walking Dead game series that we do.”

So there you have it folks, it looks like there is tons more The Walking Dead coming our way. I have mixed feelings about this because while a part of me is happy that this won’t be our last and only Walking Dead experience, it does take some of the luster off of it. You can’t blame Telltale, they have a certified hit on their hands and since they aren’t a huge developer they need to capitalize on that. I just worry that the final 3 episodes will become foundational for events of the next season. Hopefully that is not the case and they continue to deliver a high level of quality in this current story arc and give it true closure vice doing some kind of cheesy cliffhanger in the last episode. That would be a real shame and I think a disservice to both fans and the developers themselves.

Too early to tell at this point how it will all turn out but please hit up the comments and let us know what you think about the news. Are you happy that we are getting more stories at some point down the road? Or do you think this is just another case of corporate greed ruining a perfectly good gaming experience?
