According to an FCC filing, Sony has a new PlayStation 3 model in the works. This would be 4000 series of the PlayStation 3 with a new SKU, CECH-4001x. At this point several indications point to this model being a new “Super Slim model”. According to EuroGamer, Sony plans to announce the new model at next month’s Gamescom in Germany.
The FCC filing reveals information about the console’s internal radios, and reveals Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and 802.11b/g antennae which are found in current models. The filing also notes two debugging, DECH-4001x and DECH-S4001x, which could indicate that Sony may be looking to swap our some of the hardware components. Debug units are traditionally used when there’s been a change to a system’s internal chips.
There has been speculation that Sony was planning another PS3 price cut and some believe that this new model may deliver just that. In the end, it could just be Sony updating internal hardware components as they continue to drive down their production cost on the existing model or it could in fact be this new super slim model. If I had to bet, it would be the latter because if it was the same design as the current model with updated components there would be no need to up the series.
In any case, we will keep you up to date as this develops and if true then we won’t have long to wait to get our first look at the new device. We will have reporters on site at this year’s Gamescom festivities so keep it locked here for tons of exclusive news and info on that front.
