Smash Bros Character Roster Likely Reached Limit, Designer Notes ‘Change Of Direction’

News on the next iteration of Super Smash Bros continues to be thin on the ground. Recently however, we have learned that Namco Bandai will be collaborating with Nintendo on the project, and if you thought that announcement would lead to a load of new characters from various Namco and Nintendo franchises being confirmed, then think again.

During an interview with Nintendo Power magazine, the game’s director Masahiro Sakurai stated:

“It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’ There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive…. In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.”

I tend to agree that 50 characters is the maximum number that would be feasible to include. Additionally, I personally would like to see less repetition of similar characters, and a few new faces amongst the crowd.

So are there any new characters that you guys would love to see, or old favorites you would hate to lose? Either way, we’re hoping that we find out at next years E3 when the Wii U and 3DS game may be shown off.
