At the moment there are a few reasons to get excited about the impending launch of the Wii U, and the main one of those is quite possibly Pikmin 3. The E3 reveal of the game saw a mash-up of the classic style of play from the Gamecube games with some lovely HD graphics and effects. One thing it seems the game wont have however, is online multiplayer.
Speaking with IGN, Shigeru Miyamoto told them; “You have to be very careful that you don’t drop frames as you’re trying to sync up with other players over what could be a very great physical distance, over the internet. But in the situation of Pikmin, for example, since you would have lots of individual, small creatures, the Pikmin, whose every movement and location is going to be really important in the game, it would be very difficult to sync up over an internet connection. So I think what we’ve decided to do is focus on the single-player and local multiplayer aspects, which are really fun. But unfortunately, no online multiplayer for Pikmin 3. But the co-op local multiplayer is really fun.”
That does seem a shame, and also seems to ignore the fact that RTS games with many more individual units have been playable over PC (and other consoles to a limited degree) for a number of years. I personally hope this isn’t a sign that Nintendo’s online plans will continue to be limited in their next console generation.
