So this just keeps getting more interesting. It started during E3 last week when we found out that the first 15 levels of Star Wars: The Old Republic are going to be playable without you having to kick out anything in terms of a monthly fee. That was cool enough but now if Emmanuel Lusinchi, the game’s lead designer, is to be believed then that move could just be the groundwork of what is really to come.
In an interview with GamesTM, Lusinchi acknowledged the fact that the quality of free to play games is improving drastically and that is creating much tougher competition for SWTOR. Specifically he said:
“The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well. “Unless people are happy with what they have, they are constantly demanding updates, new modes and situations. So we are looking at free-to-play but I can’t tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on.”
Now I completely agree with him about adapting because in this world you either adapt or die. For whatever its worth, I commend Bioware for not having tons of foolish pride and being able to recognize that the environment is changing around them and being willing to at least consider changing with it. This doesn’t mean anything is imminent but if I were you I would be on the lookout.
So what do you think, should Star Wars: The Old Republic go free to play? If you haven’t played it, would a free to play model make you more likely to give it a try? Hit up the comments and let us know what you think?
